we checked out every single hedgehog book that our library system had. over 100 books on hedgehogs have come in, in the last month. she even draws hedgehogs now, replete with prickles. lillie took these pictures, of her books.

here are her favorites:
jan brett, trouble with trolls - any book by jan brett will have hedgehogs in it - she is such an excellent artist, with very scandinavian drawings. this is the only one we could find for this photo, but we have almost all of her books.
m. christina butler and tina machaughton - one snowy night - this story follows a fuzzy red (you can touch it!) hat, around the rounds of friends. finally, it comes back to rescue hedgehog. really cute!

marcus pfister - the happy hedgehog. this story of mikko the hedgehog teaches kids that it is important to be yourself, with all your skills and interests and joys.

claude lager and claude k dubois - jeanette and josie - two hedgehogs that befriend each other one winter day. this one rang true with lillie, as she always says (like jeanette in this story), "i can do it by myself!"

ann turner and lisa mccue- hedgehog for breakfast. two fox boys misunderstand their father's directives and try to entive mrs hedgehog to come FOR breakfast, not as a guest for breakfast. cute misunderstandings.

ragnhild scammell and michael terry - ouch! - this story follows the detritus stuck in one hedgehog's quills, and his struggles to free himself so he can hibernate for the winter.

paul stewart and chris riddell - a little bit of winter - rabbit must save some winter for his friend hedgehog, who's hibernating. when hedgehog feels the little bit of winter saved for him, he is surprised. a touching story of friendship.

mark ezra and gavin rowe - the prickly hedgehog - little hedgehog finds out about the world when he is separated from his mother and siblings. a dog helps him find his way home.

edith holden and rowena stott - the hedgehog feast - by the author of the country diary of an edwardian lady, the hedgehogs learn to bring food - and friends - home.

and my favorites (as well as hers):
martin waddell and jill barton - the happy hedgehog band - a raucous celebration of drumming, song, and friends.

lena anderson - two books (just lovely, both of them)
- tea for ten - a good counting book as more and more friends come for tea at hedgehog's house.
- hedgehog's secret - hedgehog can't help her friends today, as she has something very special to share with them.

and one that lillie didn't really understand, although i thought it was a perfectly humorous story that just happens to star hedgehogs - javier saez castan, the three hedgehogs. this story is so fun - it is very continental, and is in a play form, with darling drawings and subtle humor. i need to buy this one!

hope the kids in your lives can learn to love hedgehogs, too!
