Thanks for all the questions! We're very excited to see so much interest in the December submission period. Below, I've outlined some answers to your questions:
1) All submissions must be between 2,000 and 10,000 words or they cannot be accepted by Amazon.com.
2) The competition accepts all types of work, including poetry, as long as each individual piece is at least 2,000 words and less than 10,000. The contest is not topical (ie. we do not assign a general topic to everyone).
3) However, all pieces cannot be published anywhere else on the Internet, including Gather.com. If your entry is currently published elsewhere (blog, other website, Gather.com, etc.), it MUST be removed before we can accept the entry.
4) The competition is free and open to anyone over the age of 18 -- international participants are welcomed and encouraged (we've even had a couple international winners!).
5) We accept unfinished work, including chapters, as long as the entire piece of work is previously unpublished.
We hope that answers your questions; if you think of any further questions, please email amazonshorts@gather.com.
See you in December!

ps- If you're already published, does it matter? It wouldn't be the published stuff I'd be sending...
Who retains the rights for the work after it is published on the internet by Amazon? Who gets the money that Amazon charges for the short stories?
Q)Whats the word limit?
Q)Can we write on any topic?
Q)If the story is good, will we get a prize?
Q)If it's that good, will it be published?
Q)Can we write a Harry Potter short story?
Q)Can we write LONG stories?
Cheerio!
I see a lot of questions that are answered in the intro to this group and again later on in the bloging. Just skim and see if your answer lies in the previous entries before you ask a question like "What's the word limit?" ... That's like going to Disneyland and walking up to an attraction, looking directly at the sign that says "Space Mountain - Is a high speed, turbulent rollacoaster in the dark, with sharp turns and sudden drops. Must be at least 3 yr of age & 40 inches tall to ride. Expectant mothers should not ride." Then asking the Cast Member below it; "Is this Space Mountain? Can my infant and pregnant wife ride?" Come on people! As writers we're supposed to be a little more inteligent than that. I expect typos and spelling errors but rules of a contest are like plot points - pay attention!
But really now - who keeps the rights and gets the larger chunk of that 49 cents a pop deal - hmm?

We hope that answers your questions; if you think of any further questions, please email amazonshorts@gather.com.
