Let me encourage all of you to go out and visit your local nursing homes. There are so many people there who just need someone to talk to. Many of them have been left there to die all alone. Abandoned by their families and friends. There are thousands upon thousands of men and women rotting away in these institutions with little or no contact with the outside world. Dogs and cats at pet adoption centers have more visitors than these people do. If you don't want to go by yourself then ask someone at your church or a friend to go with you.
Some nursing homes really love, care, and respect their residents and do everything in their power to make sure residents receive the best care possible. On the other hand, and in most cases, nursing home residents are neglected and abused by overcrowded, understaffed, and overworked system. Many are left in their room alone or propped up in wheelchairs all slumped over waiting for the angel of death to come and rescue them from this hell house. You can make such an impact on the system by just letting them know that you are watching them. It has been proven time and time again that visitors increase teh quality of care in facilities that have gone unchecked and unnoticed.
Put yourself in their shoes. How would you like to be there alone sitting in a dark room day in and day out with nothing to do and nowhere to go and no one to talk to. That is what I thought. Go visit and let me know how it went.
