Seems the democrats are feeling some of what the republicans felt earlier. They lost two governors and the feeling of being locked in everywhere is no longer the order of the day. Why? Tell me what you think.
Some of it obviously is local issues. The recession is part too as people now are thinking Obama owns it after all this time; bad economic times always reflects on incumbents. National issues are also part of the reason despite some Dems hopes and denials.
Is it a major bell weather event? To the Administration, no. I don't think they are looking at it officially anyway that way. Regardless though, the Blue Dogs are taking notice and that will be seen in the approaching votes on many issues.
A look at the exit polls show that the Democratic faithful apparently stayed home. Modern American politics demands that you keep your base AND get a majority in the 60% that self-identify as "middle of the road". We middle of the road voters types put the Democratic party in control of both houses of the legislative branch and the White House because we wanted to see some substantive change in the way the country was going. So get back on message, forget about the distractions of "bi-partisanship" and Faux News and get to work! We were NOT looking to the Democratic Party to be "republican lite". The Democrats do not have a whole lot of time to get this right - bring your ideas and get them implemented. We're all scared sh*tless out here and want to see results.
The campaigns in New York, New Jersey and Virginia were local issues and did not reflect on Obama. I think low voter turnout had an imact, and those that did were older voters, as in retired people. It is a hassle to take off from work to vote. Why don't we have elections on Saturday or Sunday? It works in other countries. Maybe the Republican wins yesterday will shake Democrats into action so they will have better results in 2010.
Mariana, Nowadays how can you tell? They are so close one wonders what happened to the two party system. Perhaps we need a third. Where is Ross Perot when he is needed?
