It is time to party down! You are invited to Gather's first Fourth of July Picnic hosted by the Old Hippies Corner (OHC). Yeee-Ha!
1) Before the Fourth, post an image, song, poem, recipe or whatever around the picnic categories below. Feel free to create your own theme! Please title all your contributions to the picnic: OHC Picnic: (your title)
2) Just like the First OHC Contest, all posts will be added to the OHC time capsule. It will to be planted with great celebration later this year in a remote location of Nevada (see the Colonel's images Time Capsule )
3) On the Fourth, the Colonel will post an OHC Picnic article. Partygoers can communicate with each other via comments while we sit down for a little BBQ on the OHC porch and watch fireworks for the evening. Since y'all have real things to do that day, I will man the post for 24 hours (Whoa! That's a challenge for this ole boy!).
Hey, here is a peek at some of the things the Possum Posse is already cooking up:
Martha Jette plans to set up her infamous wadding pool for International Guests. Get wet and party beyond borders! Carolyn Madden are you headed for our hemisphere? James Moylan?
Summer Foovay is out by the woodpile setting up a "Foovay Petting Zoo" with wild horses and snakes and birds and foxes and chipmunks and.... possums? "Miss Pete" has been helping her bring in the pipe corral sections. I hope I can convince Summer to put her kayak in the blue bayou that flows in front of the OHC!
Marlene Blanco 100% Cajun wild woman will take you a little further down the bayou in her bateau to catch some catfish for the BBQ, Cha! She might even take you to a Bayou bar for a cool one.
Mariana T. is working on a psychedelic solar-powered rocking chair for the porch. I hope she brings some of those great New Orleans recipes!
Jude Cowellhas a corner of the OHC porch reserved for cat limericks. She just borrowed my stepladder to hang some of her ultra cool drawings from the porch ceiling. Rock On!
Digital Dogs has been hammering on something all afternoon; could it be a Digital Doghouse?
Here's some stuff on the my wish list for the party:
I'm a lucky ole Colonel if I can get Jayne Jezebel to do the light show for the local bands with her Jezebel prism and kozmic light.
AstroGirl S. ,OHC Wizard of All Things Technical (WOATT), is presently at the outer reaches of our universe with only a dial-up connection. I hope she can beam in for a bit.
It would be cool if Dannielle S. brings her banjo for a little porch pickin' with WM H.and maybe Cheryl C. can teach my old dogs some new tricks!
I haven't asked Stephen Schneider yet, but some New Mexico peppers would be great on the grill!
John S. can hopefully find some old timer party photos from his vast photograph collection of the San Fernando Valley (we be SFV homeboys!)
I hope Kathryn Esplin-Oleski ("Auntie K" as my cats call her) can set up a miniature theater for feline theatrics.
It would be cool if I heard Tom Countrymandrive up in his in his 1966 GTO from yesteryear.
I'll be stacking up ice for the coolers and anna g. 's pet Penguin.
Of course, It won't be a party without donna f.and her quick wit and maybe Meryl Johnsoncan throw some of her magic seeds in front of the porch for next year's party.
OHC Fourth of July Picnic Categories (examples, please contribute your own themes):
Tall Tales (e.g., The dumbest thing I ever did with fireworks - my parents had to leave town and the neighbors were glad to see us go, Veteran's Corner – story, image, poem or song relating your service in the Armed services)
Music (e.g., Best Music Links for a Blogosphere Picnic, I saw *** at the Fourth of July Rock Concert at ***, I wrote this song after a pint of Jack D.)
Food (e.g., Nobody makes a BBQ sauce like mine, Best Nutria Rat Pie Recipe, How to BBQ Tofu – are you kidding?)
Pets (e.g., My dog hates fireworks and goes under the bed for a week)
Kids (e.g., "Hon, who took the Roman Candles, they were right here?)
Bring your animals if you can, all mine will be there. Sage and Big Molly are planning to attend. They are not spring chickens anymore but can still shake a tail feather. You can meet Miss Pete, my truck, and crawl around the 1300-pound Possum Trophy that I tried (and failed) to deliver to WM H. after the first OHC contest. Look for party updates!

You're always welcome at the OHC! I can't wait to see you and Mah-leeen pull up to the OHC dock on Blue Bayou!
Part On!
Colonel Possum
I hereby deputize you as a proud member of the Possum Party Posse!
Rock On!
Colonel Possum
Hey! We can call it "Gatherstock!"
There is always room for you. Just tell the Big Molly at the gate that you are on my A-list.
Party on!
Colonel Possum
That sounds great, I'm getting hungry! I've got a smaller BBQ for the pint size crew if you want to let the kids have a go at it!
Thanks,
Colonel Possum
I will try to post something and maybe some pictures of some good old 70's 4th of July outfits. : ) There is some age space between my husband and I, and I have some great pictures of HIS 1976 picnic. I was 12, so I wasn't there. I was in Biloxi on the beach with family having a beach BBQ. I think I feel a story coming on.....: )
Yes, Mona is cool! I'll look for that picture, can't wait to see you two pull up to my dock on Blue Bayou!!!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
I know you'll be here in spirit if not in body! If you've got any bullets left, drop by the ole Colonel's pistol range in the OHC back forty!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
I can see that story coming! Maybe you'll get some Mark Twain energy up there in Hannibal, great town! Can't wait to see those oldie but goodie images!!!
Party On!
Colonel Possum
I kind of like that "Gatherstock" idea! We're short on music (other than the local bands) so post away!
Thanks,
Colonel Possum
Always great to hear from you and you're the first to offer something for interesting for dessert!
Meryl,
Sounds like Donna has laid down a challenge here!
Cheers to both of you,
Colonel Possum
Do you want Big Molly to pick you up at the OHC beam port? Sage can take her place as guard at the OHC gate. Alice's Restaurant is my favoprite takeout but I haven't had any for sometime, thanks!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
These are such neat thoughts let me take them in order:
1) Cupcakes sound cool, do they have little toothpick flags?
2) You might want to have a bake-off with Donna F. You have an edge in size but quality is a factor. Probably need to leave it to the guests to vote, if anyone can remember anything after all those brownies.
3) Pogo sticks, hula hoops and croquet - sounds like a Sixties' Triathalon of Fun!
4) The OHC already has a horseshoe pit behind the barn. Maybe you can form some teams, Possum Posse versus the Good Ole Boys?
5) No not yet, need to look some more.
Keep on thinking up stuff,
Colonel Possum
Do you hula hoop? I remember when they first came out and my grandmother bought me one at the nearby "Five n' Dime" (whoa, that's a concept!)
I moved like a stop sign in a hurricane trying to keep that hoop airborne. There was a little girl across the street that was quite good at the hula hoop and and I remember her laugh.
I'm so happy M.T. is bringing some to the party. Maybe I'll do better.
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
The OHC is just another half a mile up from Alice's, right where the old trestle bridge crossed Blue Bayou.
Have a little patience with Big Molly, she sometimes struggles with the latch on the beam port. Not real technical, Molly would rather be out splitting logs! Sage is the official head counter, I will ask her to give you a count out.
Whoa, feels like the party has already started!
Colonel Possum
ok Cat you need to make a song called that...
anyone else have some good song ideas... hahaha Colonel listen at me - I'm taking over your bidness!!!
I'll start throwing the Easter egg dye in the blue bayou. This soumds like a big (but fun) job for the OHC crew!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
At this rate I'll need all the help I can get! Can you check on Big Molly over by the beam port?
Thanks,
Colonel Possum
Thanks for the putting the ladder back in the barn. Your artwork is holding up pretty good on the porch, even in this strong Southern breeze. Looks like we're in for a little rain tonight. Time to feed the cats, see you at the party.
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
That sounds cool. I don't remember that one since I haven't been on the Malibu Pier in a ton of years. There is something really fun about having food and/or drink on a pier. There is the smell of the old boards, the ocean, fish bait and the squawk of the ubiquitous seagulls. The neatest thing is everything is a little bit in motion!
Thanks for the memories!
Colonel Posssum
You bet! 10-4 on your new name, I didn't recognize your collar. I hope you can make the picnic, it won't be the same without your good spirit (by the way you can bring your 4-legged friend too!)
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
Was I hallucinating? Weren't you Boopy or are you his dog? Anyway all y'all are invited to the OHC for a good party!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
Does anyone have one of those old fashion ice cream makers?
I've got two in the barn. One that doesn't work and another that just needs a little dusting off. Bring your pie and let's party!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
Polk Salad Annie
Gator got your granny
Chomp - chomp chomp
Thanks for checking in! I'm glad you asked about gators. There are only two that hang around the OHC dock: Tante Marie and T'Billy.
Marie has been here longer than the old trestle bridge and is about 8 feet long. As long as she gets her table scraps and a little BBQ when we're cooking she's pretty tame. T'billy is a male young'un and a real hoot! He's about 3 feet and loves to get under the porch to listen to the music.
If you take your kayak a little further down the bayou, you're on your own. Marlene (Mah-leeen) B. will be glad to guide you with her bateau.
I'm going in the back after coffee to see how the petting zoo is coming.
Party On!
Colonel Possum
Hey, thanks for checking in! Sure, bring all the music you can and your friend from Deep Purple. I'm sure glad that Jake put me in touch with you.
We're big fans of New Orleans, Cajun and Zydeco music on this porch so your contribution is very welcome.
A note on "Gator got your granny" (see comment above). Tante Marie has only nipped at one OHC guest and that was 10 years ago. Just a superficial leg wound, a little corn whiskey and a bandaid fixed that up right quick. It wasn't a granny just a guest stumbling into the dark to take a pee and stepped on the wrong log.
See you at the party!
Colonel Possum
I can't wait. Yes, beer is one of the major condiments for BBQing at the OHC together with all the Zatarain's stuff and Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning. I'd love to see your favorite recipe!
Thanks for getting back (I hope that was 100 degrees F and not C!)
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
AYEEE !!! Sounds like a Party to be in on. You know me water and good food and freinds are No 1 ingredients. Would be my pleasure to attend. Will make Cajun Shrimp Skewers(Kabobs) and bring the Burlap Sacks for a two partner sack race. Can' t wait see you there.
TOOT A LOU
Glad your back, boo. Those shrimp skewers sound great but I'm not hopping around in a sack until a few beers and some of your shrimp! Say, would you mind guiding Summer down the Blue bayou with your bateau. She's afraid ole Tante Marie the gator is going to flip her kayak. I don't want y'all to disappear into any bayou bars unless you take me along!
10-4
Colonel Possum
Glad you and Miss Ellie Mae are coming. Do you mind showing us how to cook some of that great East Texas BBQ?
Over & out,
Colonel Possum
Please bring Boopy & Buddy if you'd like. They can play behind the barn with the other hounds and join us on the porch when the music begins.
Nothing like home grown peppers and you have three varieties! This is going to be some party!
Thanks,
Colonel Possum
Whoa! It sounds like Noah's Ark is headed for the OHC. That's great because there will be room for everyone. T'Billy's been pretty lonesome under the porch so he'll enjoy the new friends headed his way. I need to go outside to see how the pipe corral is coming for the big animals.
Thanks for checking back,
Colonel Possum
I'm going to reserve my favorite cast iron pot for you Boston Baked Beans! What a treat. I think with Stephen Schneider's peppers and all the cool recipes that are starting to appear, we are headed for a good time!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
Thank you for making me more at ease about my lack of hula hoop skills. You are much kinder than that little girl across the street years ago. I might add that your ability to hula around your neck is impressive! Can you hula, chew gum and answer a cell phone all at the same time?
Blue berry pie, my favorite...I've got the ice cream. I love the band idea - the Beach Boys started out in a garage! If I can get her to cooperate (and that is sometimes a challenge), it would be great to have an OHC photo of you, the hula hoop and the surf band posing with Tante Marie the gator!
Cheers,
Colonel Possum
