From the Houstan Chronicle:
The House overwhelmingly passed the No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act of 2007, or NOPEC bill, which would amend the Sherman Act and declare it illegal for foreign governments to limit oil and natural gas production in an effort to control energy prices. The Democrats are going to tell other countries what they can do with their oil? Isn't this something you libs out there would accuse President Bush of doing? Isn't this fascism? Isn't this meddling in other country's affairs? These are your people left wing cliff-dwellers! How will they enforce this bill? Will they invade countries who violate their legislation?
A Senate panel has approved comparable language, and the provision eventually could be added to Reid's energy package.

It is inconceivable to me that you could grasp the legal intricacies which give rise to a piece of legislation like this. Stick with slogans and stuff, this kinda thing will only make you dizzy.
I hate to point out the obvious.....but there are conservatives and republicans in the house in the senate......"The House overwhelmingly passed" thats not just the dems or the libs as you so eloquently put it.....
The bill, called the "No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act of 2007" or "NOPEC," passed the House this week and is scheduled for a vote soon in the Senate, where co-sponsors also include Senator Lieberman and Republicans such as Senators Specter, Snowe, Grassley, and Coburn. The legislation would empower the attorney general of America to take action against price-fixing in the petroleum industry by foreign countries participating in OPEC, the oil cartel that meets regularly to set price and production targets.
It's rather complex, and not the sort of thing that can be quickly explained on a thread like this. The basic underlying thing to realize is; There has to be a law against something, before legal action of any kind, domestic of international, can move forward. They are fulfilling that fundamental requirement.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Your partisan obsession is nauseating.
Oh jeez, don't try to enlighten the fool when he's on a hypocrisy roll! Let him keep sticking his head up his ass and making a fool out of himself!
We rely on the Saudis to refine the gas.
That's just wrong.
How about bringing back the windfall profits tax?
Oil companies are making huge profits, but
still refuse to construct new refineries.
There has been no new refineries built
in the U.S. in 29 years!
No wonder the price of gas is going up.
You could exempt only the oil companies
that invest in new refineries from the
windfall profits tax.
Here's a good link on this subject:

still refuse to construct new refineries."
EXACTLY. They intentionally come up with excuses as to why they cannot build refineries here. Im done listening to thier bull. Something has to be done, cant expect new energy technology for at least another 3-5 years to get us away from oil. We clearly havent reached out breaking points with our gov't and the oil industry, but I would imagine we will all break very soon and all at once unless they stop their bull and bring gas to where it belongs like around 2.00 a gallon at most, not a cent more. The second a new , reasonable energy technology comes out and I can afford it, im gonna jump ALL over it.. and I dont care if the oil industry lowers their price to 1.00 a gallon, they have already shown their greediness.
They might not have had the windfall profits if they had invested some of those profits in building new refineries and upgrading the old ones.
I think they were being dumb enough to think we would forget about those profits and give them tax-payer dollars to help build the new refineries.
I'm glad you mentioned the secret Cheney meetings, Geoffrey.
I'm against secret meetings such as this and also too many
presidential signing statements.

The President and Vice President have too much
power, and that power must be checked.
After all, this country is supposed to be a nation
of checks and balances is it not?
I would add to John P.'s article that you should always
try to buy gas from private independent stations, not chain stores.
A one or two day boycott won't do anything.
It has to be a long-term commitment.
