I am no more surprised about the Republicans losing than I am about Britney Spears' marriage breaking up.
It's not just the integrity and moral problems that turned off voters-since Democrats also have their own issues in these areas- it's the fact that, when the Republicans had the chance to deal with issues, such as illegal immigration and other concerns of those that put them into office, they neglected to do anything decisive about them.
I am no more enamored of the Democrats, but they were the only option voters were given.
My personal opinion is that both parties are only interested in getting votes and, once they get elected, they pretty much ignore the American people and go on to promote their own selfish agendas, regardless of what we want.
We can be certain now that illegal immigrants will be granted amnesty, largely because when the Republicans were in office, they danced around the issue and now they won't be able to do anything to rectify this problem. The Democrats will have their way about this, because they greedily perceive that this will assure them of having the "Hispanic vote" in 2008. It's all very calculated.
Now, post-election, Republican leaders are "kissing up" to the Democrats and some are even considering defecting, such as in http://news.aol.com/elections/story/_a/chafee-considers-leaving-gop/20061109203709990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001
Because the Republicans compromised and merely played politics, arrogantly thinking that their big win in 2004 insured them a win in 2006, the tables have been turned on them.
Will things get better or worse with the Democrats in charge now?
Guess we'll have to wait and see, because we really have no other choice.

Although, I do think that much of the Hispanic vote had to do with the Republican attempt by the House to criminalize immigration.
The Republican House did NOT attempt to "criminalize" immigration. They told the truth......they just emphasized that ILLEGAL immigration is a criminal offense. Or, don't you get it????????????????ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE CRIMINALS!
And Ron W., Democrats have always supported illegal immigration. They blatantly recruit them to vote in our elections, so don't go saying "it wasn't their idea"!
All in all, Angela has it right, except it can only get worse with the House majority being taken over by the Democrats. At least a Republican dominated House kept the open borders advocates at bay.
I always say I wish there were term limits for Congressional members as well. The turnover would be healthy I think. Elections might be more fun too....;-)
We'll see what happens folks.
An illegal alien is already a criminal. Federal law already says that it is illegal to be in this country without (permission or papers or whatever) We don't have enough people in the US classified as living in poverty. We need MORE poor people. We need more people to work for the minimun wage. Slavery still survives in this country, we just call them "poor working class". Abraham Lincoln would turn over in his grave.
One thing we must all remember "remain vigilant at all costs"
Explosive Issue Not A Top Priority For Incoming Leaders

"But when it comes to immigration, things are never easy. In the days after the election, Democratic leaders surprised pro-immigration groups by not including the issue on their list of immediate priorities. Experts said the issue is so complicated, so sensitive and so explosive that it could easily blow up in the Democrats' faces and give control of Congress back to Republicans in the next election two years from now. And a number of Democrats who took a hard line on illegal immigration were also elected to Congress."
