Like everything else, it seems, the research into our economy - not unlike the internet/technology explosion - has been phenomenal.
The "old school" economics are rarely followed and now considered archaic. Unfortunately, these same economic policies are spouted religiously by those opposed to immigration.
Their most vocal arguments?
A LIVING WAGE!
THEY ARE STEALING JOBS AND TAKING US DOWN ECONOMICALLY!
It seems that those unfounded cries of injustice have been proven to be just that - unfounded.
The Nobel Prize winner, Mr. Phelps, has been instrumental in changing the views of our federal government for decades. His methods have proven, beyond a doubt, how a country's economy is hinged on the expectations of its PEOPLE, how PEOPLE are the driving force behind any successful run in economics, how their PERCEPTION affects everything - especially inflation.
Immigrants, both legal and illegal, arrive here and earn 4-10 times what they could earn in their home country. They rarely complain about wages and are very satisfied, making purchases and celebrating special occasions in splendor.
Now, we KNOW why the economy refuses to dip as it did during all previous wars. Now, we KNOW why the stock market remains strong. Now we KNOW, according to a professor whose work is renowned - not only in the United States - but around the world - the positive affect of new attitudes, ideals and work ethics.
And I quote:
"We all understand today, because of work by Ed Phelps, that you can't just, by raising wages, bring unemployment down to an extreme limit, because it becomes self-defeating," Professor Samuelson said. "He revolutionised the Phillips curve. When the Fed today tries to arrive at a naturally occurring rate of unemployment that can be reached, it's largely by the twist that Ed Phelps gave to the previous Solow-Samuelson version of the Phillips curve."
SO MUCH FOR "A LIVING WAGE."

Kind of like the Medicare program this administration has put in for its senior citizens....sure looks good on paper...but is a nightmare and costing more than previous programs...but supposedly give the senior citizen the ability to control their own health care.....
sheesh, Donna...Would you risk the entire nation's economy just to cling to a law that was never enforced until it turned into a political ploy?
Think about it.
Obviously the Ivy-League schools are where all the "goobers" go to teach!
When people cry fowl over illegal immigration and as to how that will move the economy, it is in the overabundance of employee availability vs. job growth. When there are more people clamoring for jobs than there are jobs, then employers can begin to lower incentives, such as retirement, health care, etc.
I know that the number of jobs to be filled within the next ten years versus the number of people we have to fill them will require an increase in the number of immigrants we allow into the country.
The real point, here, Jackie, which you seem to be missing, is that most people only objet to the "Illegal" portion of this Immigration debate.
We do need more bodies, if for nothing else, our military. But is must be done in a fashion that is within our laws, otherwise it is a sham with no governmental control and thereby no feasible way to integrate these people into our Society in any redeemable way.
That reality is not a license to spread hatred and animosity of any race of people - I don't care who they are or where they came from.
YOU may only have an issue with their "Illegality," an issue best addressed to those who make our laws rather than making slurs and hating an entire group of people.
Don't you agree?
The government needs to address the illegal Immigration perspective from something other than a way to gain election to office. Real reform will only happen when people can get together and agree that their is a problem and a viable solution is absolutley necessary.
I agree completely.
If people are intimidated by someone competing for a job they probably aren't suited for or wouldn't get anyways, then that's their own fault. And if it's a "Good Job," then go educate yourself or take the risk of getting run over.
That's my two cents, if it's worth that much.
I've never known anyone intent upon being the best at what they do - and I don't care if it's flipping a hamburger - complain about someone "taking their job."
And yet, that's all some people scream.....REALITY is they're pissed off because many of these illegal immigrants are hungrier, faster and work longer.
We citizens don't like the pressure. The illegal immigrants have first dibs on the most dangerous, lowliest jobs in this nation.
Get an education/vocational training - SOMETHING - or compete with them....
WE have a choice.
As usual, nice writing and am pleased that you invite and promote dialogue on this issue.
If a candidate mentions comprehensive immigration reform and/or support for a guest worker program--it will mean amnesty/citizenship. Please investigate your candidates' opinions/goals on illegal immigration before you vote!! Don't vote strictly by party lines, vote on the candidate's plans/goals/opinions regarding illegal immigration.
If all of those illegal immigrants are given amnesty/citizenship--and they then are able to bring over immediate family members--the USA as we know and love it, will be changed forever. We will be turned into a third world country-- the economy and wages will be depressed forever, and our resources/social services/schools/healthcare systems will become over-extended failures. US citizens will face increased problems in trying to obtain decent jobs. In addition, your taxes will increase--as the illegals will be eligible for MORE social benefits (welfare, food stamps, WIC, low-income housing, etc.)--once they receive citizenship!!!
Please go to this Lou Dobbs site, on the right side of the screen you will see the headings below. Please look up to see how senators voted on illegal immigration issues. Please also send a message to congress stating--No amnesty/citizenship, revise the 14th Amendment (no more anchor babies), and enforce our current immigration laws. Also, make sure that you always watch Lou Dobbs on CNN--as he is the only person in media that goes out of his way to make sure that the LEGAL US citizens are aware of everything that is going on in our country.

Here are some videos/sites that I definitely recommend to state on top of all of the immigration news.
Aztlan/Reconquista video----The belief by groups such as La Raza ("the race"), Mecha, Maldef, Brown Berets, etc.--that they are going to take back US territory that formerly belonged to Mexico.
