Hello Everyone,
I am new to Gather and to this group, but I feel the need to jump-in and make a statement -so I will. I am a lifelong animal lover and rescuer and currently have 2 rescued dogs (from the shelter), 3 rescued cats, 1 rescued ferret, and a rescued goat and miniature horse. Sort of like a small Noah's Ark. In the past, my wife and I have also taken in two rescued race horses - literally off the "meat truck."
Recently, I became aware of the terrible situation of all animals in China, and the fact that there are absolutely no animal cruelty, or animal welfare laws. Now China has just been a showcase for the world, hosting the Olympics. They wish to be among the technologically advanced and elite nations of the world - yet they lack all standards of animal welfare acknowledged and embraced by the rest of the civilized world. This in spite of the fact, that a recent poll of the Chinese people showed that 75% favored abolishing the dog and cat meat and fur industries, as well as establishing humane laws for the treatment of all animals.
Yes, I know there are plenty of animal abuse issues in our own backyard as well, but at least we have some recourse to the law for protecting our companion animals, livestock and wildlife from cruelty and abuse! Why is this an issue for the U.S.? Because companies such as WalMart and Costgo obtain 80-90% of their retail goods from China and they are not alone! Meanwhile the Chinese dog meat industry is raising and slaughtering dogs and cats on their dog farms, as well as rounding-up lost and stray pets off the street. These animals are often tortured and butchered cruelly, purposely, to increase the adrenaline content in the meat, which is held in esteem by Chinese folk medicine, as a virility enhancement. The furs of dogs and cats are utilized in the Chinese garment industry!
Please visit my Lens at http://www.squidoo.com/dogsinchina for further information concerning this unacceptable situation and what you can do to help. I am not a member of any group or organization and all proceeds from advertising etc on this Lens is donated 100% to the ASPCA.
It's great to join with you and I've loved reading over your posts - give your pets the attention and love they deserve!
Thanks,
Greg
