Here are answers to some of your most asked questions about Gather’s current Summer Points Promotion. Can I simply edit my previously shared summer photos to add the summerpics tag, or do I have to republish?
In order to qualify for the extra points, you must republish your summer photos that have already been shared on the site.
Do pictures uploaded in photo essays count?
Yes - Photos uploaded in photo essays do count. Just be sure to tag them summerpics during the publish/upload process.
How is the Grand Prize winner determined?
Gather will calculate the number of 10 star ratings along with the unique views on each photo. Those that emerge as the top ten photos will then be entered into a raffle to win the digital camera. If you watched any of the Invite-a-thon announcement videos, you’ll have a big clue as to how we will select the ultimate winner from among the ten finalists ;)
Can I share pictures of the cat that I got this Summer, or snowy pics of my trip to Switzerland?
Feel free to share any of your summer photos. If they seem off topic, please include details about the photo in the caption field during the publishing process. That way, everyone looking at your photo will know how it relates to summer.
Will the points I earn during this promotion help me to qualify for the cash option. No. As is the case in all Gather points promotions, points earned do not count toward the cash option.
When will points be uploaded?
Points will be uploaded by close of business the day after you share your images. So, folks who shared images shortly after the contest was announced (Monday 8/18 @ 5:30pm ET) will see the points they earned by close of business tonight (Tuesday 5/19 @ 5:30pm ET) If we’re a little late uploading the points, please have patience… we’re trying. All your points will be distributed and will show up in your dashboard, but sometimes there’s a delay in them actually showing up on your My Gather page.
So, if I share 100 pix I will get 1000 points?
Yup:)
Important reminder!
Don’t forget to check out all the summer pics being shared by visiting

Thanks Pam for the clarifications.
Does 'calculate' in the statement above mean that these numbers will be added together to achieve a score for that content (page views+10 ratings)?
This then dictates that a unique page view counts the same (has the same value or weight) as a rating of '10'. Is this correct?
Thank You!
My yard and my wild life are a big part of my summer days. Do those photos count in the promo? Warning, I have lots!
Also do I have to post to a specific group. I'm not very good at group posting.
Mark my words, you'll want to change the rules (of course, it's not like Gather hasn't changed the rules midstream before but it was bad then and would be bad now) in the end when you see the top 10 PHOTOS emerge....
Pam's statement emphasizes the word "photos":
"Those that emerge as the top ten photos will then be entered into a raffle to win the digital camera."
Therefore, it would appear that a member having the top 5 photos (however that is determined) will be entered 5 times in the final drawing. However, other statements refer to 10 finalists which would imply members and not photos.
Hopefully these questions/concerns are clarified.
Given how vehement Gather has been in the past about ensuring that as many members as possible have a chance to win big prizes, you'd think it should be a no-brainer here.
(And no, of course I'm not bitter over the outcome of something similar to this that happened last year... :/)
I do hope you decide to have 10 different people also. Certain people have tons and tons of views on every photo....and they could possible have more than 1 photo in the finals.
That said, why is this contest being conducted in THIS way, but in past contests, the SAME RULES were interpreted by Gather in a totally different way? I'm not even interested in winning here because I already own two very nice cameras, but I do wonder about inconsistencies in rule interpretation. Disheartening.
Also, disallowing certain photos because their 'summer' nature is questionable to Gather is a slippery slope. Eg, I had a baby this summer, so to ME, 'summer' is all about my baby and my other two kids. So my summerpics are, very legitimately, pics of my kids in various situations.
Thank you, but your answer doesn't provide any additional clarification.
In a contest it is important for entrants to understand what the requirements are for eligibility. Therefore, are you confirming that unique pages views are added to the number of 10 star ratings for our image, and thus a unique page view counts the same as a rating of 10?
For example, my image receives 1 rating of 10 from Sherry. She also triggers 1 unique page view in doing so. Does her rating and page view get added together to make 2 'votes'?
Thank You!
Answer - yes, sort of. It's not two 'votes'... it's two points. The star and the unique view hold equal weight.
FWIW, I'm well aware that I'm being a PITA. :) I merely want to spare everyone else to disappointment that was dealt to ME last year, and if that means being a pain until ALL questions are answered, so be it.
Summer Points Promotion: Share Your Photos & Win!
If a member publishes a series of summer images today but overlooks adding the correct tag until later in the week, do they need to do anything to ensure they receive the bonus points for those images?
Thank you!
I apologize for requesting additional clarification, but does this mean that the member can just add the tag tomorrow and republish the image (assuming the image was originally published during the promotion period), or must they upload and publish a NEW image with the correct tag?
There are several members in the community right now that are in this predicament.
Thanks again!
"Decide who can view your photos by making a selection from the "Who can view this photo" field; photos can be public or private"
Are photos published privately or published only to select friend sets ineligible?
Thanks (again)!
Thanks for asking all of the pertinent questions Kevin! What would we do without you?? :)
This answered the questions that I had about the contest. I will add a link to this post in the Today ON Gather post for Wednesday.
If the photo is taken during the summer, isn't that good enough? That's what I have been going by. And Summer is a long season for those of us in the South.
i need a camera but i have no chance of winning if its the top 10 photos.
we are all gonna get flooded and its not worth the time.
.
Do the photos have to be original ones that I've taken myself,
or can I post "free-to-use" photos I find online
and tag them as summerpics?
.
I don't get involved in Gather all that much, so I was wondering how I promote pictures I've post in the contest? Someone mentioned that this was a popularity contest and "we all know who's going to win." How do I draw attention to my work so I get noticed?
Thank you
I came back this morning to find out the answer to the question I asked yesterday,
but do not find it has been answered. I will check in a hour or two.
I am still waiting to hear your answer on my question posted above.
Will check back in a few hours.
You asked "Do the photos have to be original ones that I've taken myself, or can I post "free-to-use" photos I find online and tag them as summerpics?"
Answer: According to Gather's TOS, you are not permitted to share content that you do not own or did not create.
Hope that answers your question!
Thanks for your answer.
I have a question in regards to photo essays. If I add the tag while I am uploading each picture but take a few days to publish the article, will they still count towards the promotion. It sometimes takes me a few days to finish a photo essay. I like to work at it a little at a time.
Hope that answers your question!
I say this because in the end it is not going to be based on who has the best photograph, but who is the most popular on this site. We have several members who are always in the top on page views, and all of their content always has tons of comments. That being said, this so called content that is getting so many views and ratings is usually not what could be called one of the BEST quality photos.
I also think it should be the top ten contributers not top ten rated and/or viewed pics, because of what I just stated about the fact that some people will likely be in the top 10 more than once.
Pam, does this mean that if you initially forget to add the tag to an image when you publish, that you must upload and publish the image all over again? (refer to one of my unanswered questions above).
Plus, the announcement article states that images can be private. Is this correct?
I hope dearly one of the good photographers on here make it, too many times is talent surpassed in gather contests for popularity.
Then why doesn't gather enforce this rule on a regular basis?
and right now I really could use a new camera, because mine I am using now is an older one, and while it takes nice pictures I would love to have a better quality one. We had a Canon Rebel Xt for awhile, but had to sell it in July because we needed the $ to move. But I am hoping that by Sept some time we will be able to buy another one, because I miss my camera so much.
