For the past few months, every time my fiance & I feel like seeing a movie, we take a gander at the options and decide to stay home or do something else. There just hasn't been anything appealing that we feel is worth $10 each.
So Friday night, we looked at the listings online and found a few that sounded interesting. We decided to head to the theater and see what time we got there. Since the T (Boston's subway) took forever to come, we got there in time to see "Adventureland," which was his choice anyway. (I wanted to see it, but there were others I wanted to see more.)
Based on the previews, we were both looking forward to this movie. With a talented and funny cast (Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader - both of whom were in "The Brothers Solomon" (among others) and Ryan Reynolds), we expected this to be hilarious, just as the previews promised.
The basic plot: after graduating from college, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) finds out that his parents don't have the money they promised him for a trip to Europe with his friends or rent for grad school in NYC. Needing money, James tries to find a job and ends up with the only one he's apparently qualified for: working the games at his local amusement park.
While working there, he meets some crazy yet interesting people, including Emily Lewin (Kristen Stewart), who he promptly develops a crush on.
I'll stop there so I don't give anything away.
While there were some funny parts (most of which were shown in the preview), this movie was mainly depressing, broody and just... not great. My fiance said it was the 2nd worst movie he's ever seen (and no, I don't remember what the 1st was...). I thought there were some funny parts and didn't think it was awful, but it was definitely NOT what was advertised!
