A Review of "Hancock"

Last night we watched "Hancock" with Will Smith. Hancock is a different kind of Superhero movie. He's not adored by the people he serves. No one thanks him for saving the day. He's a halfways hero. He may stop people from being killed, but he leaves a lot more distruction than necessary while doing it.

In most superhero stories, it seems, all it takes is one bad experience to take them over to the "dark side," but even though Hancock has become a sloppy drunk he still has good intentions. Most people refuse to see this, but one man he saves from an oncoming train sees potential. He brings him home. Appoints himself Hancock's mentor. Hancock is not a bad guy. He's a good guy broken, and this man intends to fix him.

But it isn't easy. It involves Hancock spending some time in jail, letting people miss him, and discovering some secrets about himself and the one person who really knows what it is like to be him.

Hancock was overall an entertaining movie. There were a few cheesy moments, but nothing that really tugged at the heart strings. And even at the resolution there are pieces left that don't quite fit in the box. But  that's probably part of the point. He wouldn't be Hancock if he did.
