"Blades of Glory" Review

My boyfriend, Josh, took a huge, 2-day exam this past weekend. So because he had to hit the hay early Friday night, we decided to watch a mindless comedy and relax.

We settled on "Blades of Glory" with Will Ferrell & Jon Heder because if anything's mindless, it's a Will Ferrell comedy! Don't get me wrong, I like Ferrell, but he's definitely fallen into the same category as Jack Black, et al - they do the same type of movie/character over and over until it's just not funny anymore. At least that's how I feel.

I'm also not a huge stupid comedy fan. "Dumb & Dumber" and "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" - I just didn't enjoy them. I do like some ("Old School," "Wedding Crashers," etc...) but it's usually not my cup of tea.

Needless to say, I didn't have high hopes for this flick. And while it was extremely stupid, it was also quite funny!

The premise of the movie is that 2 gold-medal figure skaters (in a non-Olympic, but basically Olympic competition), Ferrell & Heder, get into a fight during the medal ceremony and get banned from figure skating. Cut to 6 months before the next competition and someone finds a loophole: they were only banned from MEN'S figure skating - they can still compete in couples! One mishap follows another and Heder's coach (Craig T. Nelson) has the lightbulb idea that the 2 men should compete together.

While the movie does steal greatly from "The Cutting Edge," with a "stunt to end all stunts" that will guarantee them the win, it was still enjoyable. Our favorite part was when you first see the 2 perform as a couple in competition, being paired up in some extremely questionable positions. The positions and Ferrell's facial expressions caused us both to just laugh out loud for several minutes.

Definitely the perfect pick for a take-your-mind-off-things stupid comedy, but one I'm glad I didn't pay to see in theaters. And one we would not have picked had it not been free On Demand!
