Saddam was a very bad man. He was responsible for the deaths of a hell of a lot of his own folks. How many? Lots. Seriously, it’s hard to say. Nobody really knows. After an extensive googlin’, looking at high and low estimates, I came away with somewhere around 100,000 a year. Maybe more, maybe less, and probably less in the later years, more in earlier years. Many died (some say) in those later years from depredations caused by the sanctions, which were the result of Saddam’s actions. So I then started googlin’ to see how many Iraqi civilians have died from violence since we invaded them. Again, the estimates vary wildly. The US government and military seem to habitually underestimate casualties, undercounting those directly caused by coalition action and completely ignoring those killed by militias in the ongoing civil war, which is a direct result of the US invasion. I finally came up with a number around 100,000 a year, perhaps more. Why aren't they kissing our red white and blue asses, again?
The difference is that instead of Saddam being responsible for the carnage, now we are. There was a point in the Afghan war (you know, the backwater, secondary front on the “War on Turrur” where the guys who actually attacked us were hiding…) where we had Osama bin Laden (the leader of the guys who actually attacked us) and a huge chunk of the leadership of Al Qaeda (the guys who actually attacked us, not the Iraqis) were cordoned off at a place called Tora Bora (sounds like a cool exotic vacation destination, does it not? “We just got back from Tora Bora. It was gorgeous! And they all speak English and kept telling us how great we Americans are! We like it when funny little brownies tell us how great we are.”). So we had old OBL and his boys, but since most of our resources were in Iraq (who did not attack us and was an enemy of al Qaeda too, by the way), we had to subcontract the standard heavy infantry role out to Afghan warlords, who were either bribed or spooked into…abandoning the cordon…allowing our REAL enemy to escape to the territory of our “ally”, Pakistan, where he or his ghost and the top leadership of Al Qaeda have hidden out ever since. Thanks, Pakistan. With allies like you…
And with idiot leaders like the neocons…
I like to frame it like a trial lawyer would, building up a case for massive, criminal negligence…
But for the fact that we invaded Iraq…
We would not be responsible for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi deaths…
We might very well have captured the leadership of our actual enemies…
Oh hell, on and on and on…money, lives, time, effort, moral high ground…all lost because we elected (?) a mushmouthed idiot figurehead, whose strings were pulled by short sighted wicked men not half as smart nor wise as they arrogantly perceived themselves to be.
The decline and fall of the American empire. It was brewing for a while, but the stolen election of 2000 assured its inexorable beginning inertia.
And if the empire is doomed to spread more misery and destruction and death than prevent the same…and if our decline will result in our not sending our troops around the world on the stupidest, most tenuous delusions of our moronically evil leaders…GOOD FOR US, BETTER FOR THE WORLD.

Thanks for your article, my good man. I loved it and also find it to be compatible with my line of thinking. (Are we brothers?)
There is a recent book that addresses this topic, "The rise and fall of the American empire" Although that is not the actual name, I think I'll go buy it. I saw the author on the Daily Show or one of those shows that poke fun at the serious news, and it was very alarming because it compared us to the Roman Empire and in scary fashion it shows how we are headed toward our demise. (The good thing is that we might have another 1500 years or so if we follow the example set forth)
Lastly, why can't the majority of Americans see this and demand a change immediately? Demand an investigation immediately. Demand an impeachment and incarceration for the real axis of evil.... the dick and W show.
It is hard for me to understand why Americans can't see the evil and immorality besides the hidden and neatly covered-up crimes of this disturbingly woeful administration. You don't need to be affiliated with either or any party to clearly see that something is rotten in DC.
You would think that this Christian right would demand a stop to the killing and morally reprehensible acts by our government. (That is if they still are trying to hang the ten commandments in beauty salons and court houses.) Maybe number four has been revised from the original version. You know the one about not killing. There's probably now an asterisk in the updated version that George uses that says that it is okay to kill if the foreigner has oil, or if the criminal is in Texas, or the unlucky soul has found his way to Gitmo.
why dont right wing christians....? allies of the neocons. more concerned with imposing a theocracy, not concerned with deaths of non rightwing christians...ie- they are evil...lol
why dont people know? complex question, and now kind of obsolete, since most people do understand now...but related to relaxation of old legislation resulting in concentrated ownership of the media by a very few whose intrerest lies more with the "establishment" than the schmuks...
We will be missing him very badly soon - maybe - I wonder.
Let's not forget, al Qaeda wasn't allowed in Iraq under Hussein's iron rule. (Even a dictator can get something right every now and then.) When we made a shambles of the country, al Qaeda used that opportunity to infiltrate Iraq. What a favor we did them! And now that they're there, they'll never leave. If we'd left Hussein alone -- which we did for other dictators we helped bring to power, like Pinochet and the Shah of Iran -- he'd still loathe us but he loathed al Qaeda and bin Laden more. He's probably laughing in hell as we speak.
America is far from "falling." We are still the greatest political, economic, and military force the world has ever known. It will take a lot more than a second rate conflict to bring down the US.
Americans dont realize how little this conflict has cost us. Yes, it is a tragedy that we have lost any men or women in the war. There will be nothing we can ever do to repay Iraq for the damage that has been caused to it. But we have lost very, very, very litte. 99.9999999% of America remains unchanged and unaffected. Most American's politics are reserved for their jobs and feeding their families. There are not drafts, no rationing, no internment camps. It would be impossible to know that there was a conflict, were it not for the daily reports from the front. America is far from falling.
in terms of our great awesomeness, enjoy the power trip while it lasts...like rome, it should take quite a while for our most dangerous enemy, ourselves, to take us down. til then there's these guys to think about...
hahahaamerica
and i'm not so sure that the fact that we seem so oblivious to the deaths of maybe 600,000 of them damm towelheads, 4000+ of our own (counting the mercs here), and lots of wasted $$$. no detention camps? ever heard of GITMO? but yeah, we outsource that shit to our bitches...for the most part.
But America is far from falling. The economy is booming. Our military is unchallenged by any force on the planet. We have spend less than 4% of our GDP on the war or the military. This war has cost us so little. How has your life, or the lives of most Americans, been affected, besides spending more time blogging?
And whats wrong with Gitmo? When did a camp for terrorists become a good thing? I only wish we could put more in there.
That video was pretty funny, but it does not tell the real story. It does not mention that most of China's people live in poverty. Its military would be good, if we were fighting a war 30 years ago. China is no threat to the US.
I don't even know how to respond to you here. Are you taking your meds?
