Fishing with Hotdogs....

Lately every time I talk to my husband (he's in Texas, I'm in Minnesota), he is telling me about the fish he has been catching. Catfish is what he's been pulling out of the water these days & he is using the most unlikely bait. Hotdogs!

Now, not beef hotdogs, or skin on hotdog, but the cheap ones that you have to pretend are better hotdogs in order to eat them yourself! Cutting them up into small pieces, he is bringing in some nice sized catfish.

He has now gotten our neighbors to fish with these hotdogs too. I've never heard of fishing this way, but I guess if it works....might as well make use of it!

I remember fishing with marshmallows when I was a kid. I caught a couple of perch that way. They get curious, they bite, they get hooked. Sort of like dating.

The only time I ever went fishing, we used raw, diced squid...needless to say, I never went again!
Hot dogs sound like a more sanitary alternative!

When I was a kid, I didn't care what I caught and would use anything available for bait. Hotdogs and bacon worked very well for catfish and eels.

We had catfish in our lake when I was growing up. We used to feed them with breadcrumbs and they became quite "tame." Then my uncles appeared with their fishing rods and hauled up those fish by the dozen. My mother couldn't bear to eat them. I probably ran to my room and cried. I think catfish will rise to most anything. But, aren't they bottom feeders?

Linda, I've used corn before, that was back at summer camp years ago & that worked. Never heard of marshmellows! I'll pass that on to my husband....maybe he will try it

Catherine, I guess bullheads/catfish like raw meat for bait. Disgusting! :)

Yes they are bottom feeders, but I guess they are curious fish. Last year when we were in Texas, my neighbors (who have now moved away) would feed the catfish dog food or cat food. I think for people in the south, sometimes the catfish tend to be like pets to them.

I know a man who trained his catfish to raise from the bottom into colored rings floating on the surface - where he would hand feed them different things based on the color of the rings! Me - I like them deep fried!

When I was a kid I went to a company picnic with my dad at a place called Malibu Lake in California. He had brought a small fishing rod with us, but we had no bait. He thought there might be a bait shop there, it being a lake and all, but it was a small place up in the hills, and I think it was probably stocked for kids. Anyway, everybody was trying to use corn, and other fine vegetables, but luck was slim. I cut a circular slice of hot dog, put it on a hook, and Blam...caught a Bass. I caught two more that afternoon on the same thing! Freaked everybody out that Bass would eat that.

Priscilla, Catfish will bite a hook baited with hotdogs, raw liver, niblet corn, marshmallows - almost anything. Give it a try sometime. It's fun reeling in a catfish. They are vigorous and put up a great fight.

John, I have never heard of a bass biting on a hotog, but maybe he was hungry enough for something good! Did you catch any more after that, with the hotdogs?

Mary, I think that is why my husband likes to catch the, for the fight. I know that is why he enjoyed catching Northerns in Minnesota, great fight & such a long fish!

Hmmm, I remember throwing cashews in the water as a small kid and watching the fish go nuts. But hotdogs...now there's an idea! My husband's Aunt feeds large birds hotdogs in Florida (and by large I mean really tall crane-like birds).

I wish the river near my house was not polluted with mercury so we could eat the fish we catch!
Leah - so sorry to hear that your river is so polluted! What a horrible shame that is.
I have now fished with hotdogs myself - the fish seem to love them - I still think it is crazy though.

yep with the weather change the fishing can be good even with hot dogs. I use them on my rubber band lines. The only problem of late has been the lake levels, which are way off. A friend of mine has a place on Cedar Creek Lake and he said last weekend he had to mow some of the lake.

Yes, one of my neighbors was out mowing the lake this weekend. The lake is so far down, it's been at least a month since we have gone fishing. The water is just too low.

I have heard of people using hot dogs to fish but I have never tried it.
