World News Magazine, March 23: Is Mars colonization finally on the horizon?
Today, NASA issued its broad-ranging Request For Proposal #2134-D: Colonizing Mars. A NASA spokesperson stated, "We are interested in any and all ideas to facilitate Mars colonization. The RFP was issued in accordance with Congressional Bill 35789 that provides funding for long-term space projects. In six months a NASA committee will make a final determination on the best approach or approaches to accomplish this strategic initiative."
Colonel Walter Haggerty, RFP Procurement Officer

Dear Colonel Haggerty,
In response to RFP 2134-D, Geometrics, Inc. is pleased to enclose our proposal for facilitating a Mars colonization program.
Essentially our proposal recommends an aggressive, yet economical program to terraform Mars via the use of an innovative new technology: self-replicating nano-modules programmed to reproduce themselves using existing raw materials and cover the entire planet's surface. This "blanket" will provide a stable catalytic platform for the creation of a viable atmosphere, permitting rapid colonization without the need for expensive and time-consuming construction of self-contained environmental structures.
A small payload of self-replicating nano-modules can blanket the planet in less than three years and a sustained, livable environment will be established within the decade.
We request $3.5 million dollars to provide a complete program timetable and detailed specifications for the program and materials.
Sincerely,
George H. Lamby, President

Dear Mr. Lambry,
I must admit your proposal is quite clever and exhibits precisely the type of "out-of-the-box" thinking we are looking for.
Your funding proposal has been approved and we look forward to receiving your contract proposal within 90 days.
Sincerely,
Colonel Walter Haggerty, NASA Colonization Procurement Officer
The Honorable Senator Horace B. Quimby, III

Washington, D.C.
Dear Senator Quimby,
It has come to our attention that NASA is considering a proposal to terraform Mars as part of your colonization initiative.
We wish to go on record that we strenuously oppose such an approach. The concept of a wholesale ecological restructuring ofan entire planetgoes against every value upon which SOW is based and is the polar opposite of the philosophical foundation that has made our federation such a powerful political force in 22nd century America.
We wish to advise that we will be unable to support anycongressional candidates in the upcoming election who support such an eco-abusiveplan.
Sincerely,
Edward Callenby, Executive Director

Dear Mr. Lambry,
This is an amendment to our previous letter. Upon careful consideration, we regret to advise you that NASA will be unable to consider your concept of terraforming Mars using self-replicating nano-modules. The approach, while innovative, unfortunately undermines some of the president's ecological promises during the past election.
Regretfully yours,
Colonel Walter Haggerty

Am I the only one?
;-)
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
I agree, J.C. And not the weirdest thing that's happened either.
Pat, see I don't see the terror in this. Maybe I've got too much of a Stephen King image in my mind.
That's for sure, Michelle.
Change that. I was making that exact clever connection in my mind when I wrote this.
