Introduction
Saul has blasted the Food & Drug Administration. Dr. Andrew Saul advocates for orthomolecular medicine.
"There was not even one death caused by a vitamin or dietary mineral in 2007, according to the most recent statistics available from the U.S. National Poison Data System. The 132-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers published in the journal Clinical Toxicology shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin." Hoffer
Saul was heavily influenced by the late Dr. Abram Hoffer.
"Abram Hoffer died May 27, 2009. Thanks to Dr. Hoffer, medicine will never be the same. That may be the best of legacies." Saul (1)
Both favored orthomolecular treatment of cancer, alcoholism, etc. (2, 4).
Saul
I disagree with Saul on some matters. He feels that you should "doctor yourself" and "fire your doctor". I feel that this is too radical. See Refs. 3-6. I feel that doctors have access to medical tests that the average person does not have. On top of that, the average person knows little about medicine. I feel that this is bad advice. However, some of his advice is good, which is why I am honoring him with this biography.
Pauling
One of the reasons I read Saul's papers is that he is carrying on Linus Pauling's work (7).
"The failure of the medical establishment during the last forty years to recognize the value of vitamin E in controlling heart disease is responsible for a tremendous amount of unnecessary suffering and for many early deaths. The interesting story of the efforts to suppress the Shute discoveries about vitamin E illustrates the shocking bias of organized medicine against nutritional measures for achieving improved health." Dr. Pauling (1985)
"A consistent body of research indicates that vitamin E may protect people against heart disease...The data generally indicate that taking doses ranging from 100 to 800IU per day may lower the risk of heart disease by 30%-40%." recent Harvard Health Letter
Shute
Like Pauling, Saul was influenced by the Shute brothers.
"We didn't make vitamin E so versatile. God did. Ignore its mercy at your peril."
— Dr. Evan Shute
Pfeiffer
A number of brilliant scientists have influenced Saul. One of these was the late Dr. Pfeiffer of the Brain Bio Center in Princeton, New Jersey.
"For every drug that benefits a patient, there is a natural substance that can achieve the same effect." — Pfeiffer's Law
Pfieffer endorsed orthomolecular medicine in Ref. 8. In Ref. 9 he described the amino acids. This book is one of the reasons I have been interested in Pfeiffer's work. In Ref. 10 he discusses hypertension.
"However, the indictment of the heavy metals, as well as a deficiency of other cations such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, warrants a more nutritional approach and less reliance on current pharmacological therapy in selected cases."

Conclusions
Saul is largely a man after my own heart. However, I have placed more emphasis on amino acids. Some of my own work is in Refs. 11 & 12. In Ref. 12 I showed the connection between stress and amino acid metabolism.

I am a believer in using what works for you as an individual and knowing your own body well. Arguing with doctors should also be encouraged! They call it "practicing medicine" not "accomplished at medicine."
I find this particularly interesting since I have heart disease. But not only that, I have been using a vitamin E solution to treat our cat's allergies - he gets raw spots around his face and ears. The specific cause is unknown, but the Vitamin E seems to be very effective when applied to the problem areas - he seems to heal quite quickly.
