Discovery of a Planet as Historical Turning Points Astrologers regard the discovery of a planet as important periods in humankind's evolution. The period following the discovery of a planet signified the full expression of a hidden side of our soul and untapped part of our brain. The time of discovery of a planet marks the period that world starts to move in another direction. Since the beginning of recorded history, which is almost the same time that astrology was developed we are aware of the following planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Since the 18th century, the world continuously experienced drastic changes that can be attributed to each of the new planets that were discovered each century. Uranus (1781) The first planet to be discovered was Uranus. It was William Herschel who discovered it in 1781. In astrology, Uranus signifies change, science, technology, freedom, democracy and brotherhood. Uranus can also signify rebels, revolution and explosion. At its best Uranus is a symbol of liberating knowledge. Coinciding with the discovery of Uranus, we saw the world changed forever by the following revolutions: Industrial Revolution, which started in the 1780s, The French Revolution (which stated in 1789) and The American Revolution which started earlier. At the heart of all of these movements was the desire for liberation. Neptune (1846) Then Neptune was discovered in 1846, a new set of experiences, discoveries , developments was ripe for humankind. Neptune is the planet of spirituality, mysticism, the sea and oil. Coinciding with its discovery was the emergence of American Transcendentalism (1836), the rise of the Theosophical movement in 1875, and the introduction of mystically inclined philosophies and eastern religious teachings in the West. Each of these movements aimed to bring about a new world founded on a belief that everyone is mystically connected with one another. In art, the Impressionist (which started around 1863) movement presented a new way of looking at the world. With the application of new technologies in water transportation, the world became smaller and more traveled by sea by mid-19th century. Oil also gained importance in the economic affairs of the world ever since the first commercial oil well was drilled in 1858. Pluto (1930) In 1930 Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh. It's discovery occurred between the two World Wars. What followed once Pluto was in humankind's consciousness was the creation of the first atomic bomb, the rise of fascism, authoritarianism and the death of millions of people in less than two decades. Pluto is the planet of death but more importantly it is also the planet of transformation and regeneration. Eris (2005) Eris is the newest of the official lists of planets (even if it is ranked as a dwarf-planet). And it seems that Eris is living up to its mythological associations. Eris is the Greek god of strife and discord. It was first photographed in 2003 just 2 years after 9/11 and its discovery was announced just recently in July 29, 2005 coinciding with the West's growing conflict with Iran. Right after the time that Eris (as well as Pluto) was categorized by Scientists (August 2006) as a dwarf planet religious tension increased by the Pope's comments on the teaching of Mohammed. Planetary Lessons Astrologers believe that when a planet is discovered our consciousness expands and we get to be in touch with a deeper part of our psyche. We have seen how the planet's discovery corresponded with certain events, more importantly we have to look deeper to see the meaning and importance of all of these. To be continued...
