Murphy's Law: "If anything can go wrong, it will." Murphy's Law was named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an air-force engineer who was reported to have cursed a technician under him who always committed mistakes. Referring to this man Murphy uttered, "If there is any way to do it wrong, he'll find it." This statement became very popular as it was since the universally observed. Murphy's Law becomes more meaningful when used in conjunction with astrology, as recurring planetary factors will supply the "time" element- giving us an idea "when" things will likely go wrong. Here is the paraphrased Murphy's Law with an astrological slant: "If everything can go wrong, more often than not - it will go wrong during Mercury retrograde time periods." Mercury Retrograde recurs three times a year and the last time this occurred was from July 4 to July 28. A few days before this period is called the shadow of the retrograde wherein some of its effects can already be felt. Reviewing the last three weeks of July would be a good way of understanding how the knowledge of Mercury Retrograde can be useful to us especially in scheduling important activities in the future. If you know that something may go wrong and you are warned about it - you actually have a choice. It does not necessarily have to go wrong - you can choose to avoid it. . The Unexpected Happen During Mercury Retrogrades Even the technical and scientifically advanced NASA succumbed to the Mercury retrograde effect. The launching of space shuttle Discovery, which was originally schedule on July 1 (within the so-called shadow of Mercury retrograde) was delayed due to something unexpected - thunderstorms. After several tries Discovery finally lifted off to space on July 4. Activities Launched During Mercury Retrogrades Often Fail On July 5, North Korea test-fired its missiles, apparently to show the world it's military might. Among those tested is the Taepodong-2, Nokor's new long-range missile which was designed to hit the United States. However, in a true Mercury Retrograde fashion, Taepodong 2 crashed just 42 seconds after takeoff. There is Confusion During Mercury Retrograde What happened in Mexico looks like a retrograde effect to me. The Presidential election was held on July 2 (within the so-called shadow of Mercury retrograde) but days after both parties declared victory causing a confusion and even uncertainty among the Mexicans. The officials announced Felipe Calderon as the winner on the following week (Mercury retrograde period). However, trouble is far from over as the left-leaning candidate Lopez Obrador vowed to challenged the election results from the Federal tribunal to the Supreme Court and even in the streets. Talks and Treaties Break Down During Mercury Retrogrades The most common effect of Mercury retrograde is misunderstanding which can happen in any setting from the most simple matter (such as giving instruction to someone) to those that are complex and have far-reaching effects (such as talks between world leaders). The rule of thumb here is that the more important an activity is the more you should not schedule it during Mercury retrograde periods. Take the case of the World Trade Organization's Doha Round. This meeting was considered a once-in-a-generation chance to boost growth and ease poverty in the world. The talks bogged down on July 24 and some participants believed that it would take years before it will be revived. There are many reasons why it was not successful but as our modified Murphy's Law stated- if something can go wrong in WTO negotiations, it could go wrong when scheduled during a Mercury retrograde period. Even if there are positive aspects Jupiter trine Venus and Moon conjunct Mercury, that didn't help Mercury retrograde prevailed. There are 52-weeks in a year wherein important negotiations can be scheduled. Mercury turns retrograde for just about 3 weeks every 4 months. If important trade negotiations and treaties between nations were scheduled when there is no retrograde the chances of reaching an agreement would be greater. Unfortunately, WTO has a habit of picking Mercury retrograde period as dates for World Trade talks. The WTO negotiation in Cancun Mexico, which was held in September 2003 also failed to achieve its purpose- not surprisingly it was held during a Mercury Retrograde period. More recently, we saw the Mercury Retrograde effect in the efforts of the West lead by US Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The peace efforts were unsuccessful. Interestingly, this tension in the Middle-east got worse during this last Mercury Retrograde. The Purpose of Mercury Retrogrades Mercury Retrograde periods serve a purpose -it's like the nighttime as opposed to daytime. During the day we go about our daily activities, we make decisions and start new activities. During nighttime, as we go to sleep, we review what has transpired in the day. We re-think whether one has made correct decisions and eventually relax and fall asleep. Some people who cannot consciously review the day do so in their dreams. Mercury Retrogrades are like that - it was not meant to be the time for scheduling important activities.

am also thankful to you to give me the opprtunity to come in here and read this wonderful article.
love and light
marinela
would love to read more from you
maybe you will post some other articles too
thank you
My son was born with Mercury Rx and when Mercury went direct by progression (age 3), he began speaking in complete sentences. He had been a non-speaker before then...you knew he understood, but it was as if he wouldn't "bother" to say more than a word or two!
And now? He's a very good and creative writer, but seldom "bothers"! Most people I've known with natal Mercury Rx are deep thinkers--they've had lots of practice.
I've also noticed that transit Mercury Rx periods often pose little or no problems for them--it seems natural to them, I imagine.
I wonder, Resti, if this has been your experience!?!
And do you know at what age Mercury went direct for you?
My progressed mercury turned direct when I was 4 which was the time the direction of my life changed. Everything changed. My father died and I have to live in different places since then.
I dont know much how mercury retro manifested when I was below 4 y.o. But I now attribute to that progressed mercury event as very reason for my mercury retrograde experiences as I grew into teens and young adulthood.
My Mercury was directly opposite Pluto at birth.
Yah, Mercury Retro is sometimes lucky for me. My first big break came in writing (a research project) while Mercury was Retro. They honored their word, I was paid in full but the project was shelved :) .
As a new member to Gather, this will be my very first post. This is also a subject I have done a good deal of research into.
I have had a long and ongoing dispute with many of my fellow astrologers as to the meaning of retrograde Mercury. The classic interpretation of is that a retrograde simply weakens Mercury's influence. The notion that retrograde Mercury as a harbinger of all things ill is in fact a very recent developement. I have a rather exsensive astrology library, (Some of books dating back to the mid 19 century), and I can find no reference to this modern interpretation before 1960's.
I can not count the number of times I have had heard someone blame some adverse situation on retrograde Mercury when Mercury was in fact not in retrograde. Looking at the charts of many of those people, I hvae seen over and over some other configuration that would better explain the adversity in question. As to the example of the WTO used in this Murphy's Law post, I would suggest that the square of Jupiter and Saturn that has dominated the celestial shere this year would prove a far more likely candidate. But then that's just my opinion.
If you have heard of the principle of "triggers" the combined principle of Murphy's Law with Mercury Retrograde is actually the same thing.
Triggers are faster moving planets activating or emphasizing a slower moving planet(s) influence.
I agree with you that Jupiter square Saturn also has something to do with the breakdown of the WTO talks and that is precisely my point:
If anything can go wrong for whatever "other" reason ... it will go wrong during a Mercury retrograde period. Mercury Retrograde made it easier to those involved in the talks to make it go wrong and thus "unsuccessful."
The outcome would have been "better" had an astrologer advised WTO not to hold that meeting or their meetings during a Mercury Retrograde period.
Please see the works of the medieval astrologers (whose wrtings dated as fas back as the 15 to the 18th century), a planet in retrograde is a form debility. I wrote my Mercury retrograde articles as a guide in choosing better dates for initiating and/or scheduling of important activities. It is better to avoid a WTO meeting or any meeting of importance if a planet that rules ageement and communication is debilitated.
I love a good debate and the subject of retrograde Mercury is an excellent topic to demonstrate the differences in the various schools of thought in astrology. While I may disagree with other astrologers on many aspects of astrology, I find the civil discussion of apposing views to be a highly enjoyable and educational.
Ok, now to the subject at hand. My favorite trigger is the Moon but any planet can serve as a trigger. From more than 30 years of doing charts I have found that the Nodes act as the trigger in some of the most profound charts. There is also the fact that a trigger need not be a malicious event. A trigger can also denote the beginning of highly favorable event or phase.
As to debility, all my reading of this term is that it denotes a weakening of the influence of the planet in question. A planet is said to be in debility when it is in the sign of it's detriment or fall, or in a house that is incompatible with it's character. Mercury would be said to be in debility in say the 4th, 8th or 12th houses or in any of the water signs.
I do agree that Mercury in retrograde is considered a debility, but in my view this should be seen as a weakening of the Mercury's communication skills. In the case of the WTO gathering you site as an example I would note that on July 11, Mercury retrograded into the water sign Cancer. This placement as well as the retrograde itself would have greatly weakened Mercury's influence. In a gathering of this magnitude such a degradation of communication skills would be seen as highly unfavorable. However had Mercury found itself retrograding into Gemini or another air sign, I would see this as a general strengthening and thus nullifying the effect of the retrograde. I continue to see the square of Jupiter and Saturn to be a much more likely negative influence for this type of gathering, but I would agree that the effect of a retrograde Mercury is a water sign would be a contributing factor. I do not, however, see Mercury acting as a trigger in this case.
When is come to triggers that act as harbingers of ill-fortune I find squares and oppositions of the Moon and Mars or Saturn to be the most common. Many are the times I have had someone blame a retrograde of Mercury only to run the chart and find the Moon forming one of these difficult aspects.
Lastly, I would like to point out that Murphy's Law is not really a law. What it is, is a handy catch phrase akin to "Shit Happens." I personally perfer O'Tooles Commentary which states, "Murphy was an optimist."
If you agree that a planet in retrograde is a form of debility, no matter what level it is, then there shouldn't really be an argument. I agree with you that Jupiter square Saturn is even more important.
Classical rules state that in making an election, the significator of an activity must by all means be fortified. You come closer to the goal of fortifying your significator by not choosing a date when it is retrograde. Of course there are many ways to fortify a planet and there are many ways that a planet is in debility.
The bottom line for me is – being an astrologer who knows both the traditions of classical and modern astrology you are still not going to advice WTO, Kofi Annan, George Bush or Condaleeza Rice to schedule the signing of a treaty, an important meeting during a retrograde period if you have a choice. We don't have to make astrology difficult.
Resti - as the author
My goal here is to show that astrology works and can be applied to make lives better. I am delighted with the presence of the likes of Marinela who shares how astrology can be used to uplift lives as well as with MaryEllen who shares her insights regarding Lilith, which I admit I haven't done much research into.
I believe that based on your extensive library and/or 30 years experience on astrology you have so much to share to us at Gather. As no one has sort of claimed or shown their focus on Medieval Astrology yet, may I request you to do it. I still currently have my mind focused on financial astrology (maybe till gold makes it peak this year). Jude and Libramoon seems to be focused on Political astrology while others in the group are into many other things.
Please do come up with practical and enlightening articles on Medieval Astrology. I would gladly follow your lead. Firdaria is one good topic to start with as it is easier to do. I would appreciate if you can come up with an article on alcocoden which I found difficult to apply due to the number of difficult rules.
Resti – as the group creator
The basic point I have been trying to make is that I see retrogrades of Mercury or any other planet as a mere inconvenience, not as a harbinger of ill-effects. Timing an event during a retrograde of Mercury could be perfectly acceptable if Mercury was well aspected and traversing a favorable sign. On the other hand timing an event when your communications skills need be at their sharpest would be ill-advised if a direct Mercury was bearing a heavy load of unfavorable aspects and poorly placed by sign. My problem comes from placing such a high emphases on what, to my view, is a minor influence. I simply believe way to much weight is given to the influence of Mercury in retrograde. In my eyes the placement of Mercury in a water sign carries a greater negative effect that a retrograde does. But again, that is simply how I view it. Each astrologer must decide for themselves how to weigh its influence.
While I have spent some time exploring Medieval astrology, my studies have been more in terms of understanding the context of the period and its part in the evolution of astrological knowledge. Most of my time these days is spent in teaching astrology. To me there is no greater pleasure than seeing the look in the eyes of a student when they make the connection and see how another piece of the astrological system works. My own field of research is in the area of the mechanics of astrology.
Firdaria is not a term I have come across before. Is it known by another name? If not, perhaps you could direct me to the source.
As to the Alconden, it is more commonly know as the Hyleg. That is a pretty arcane field. This gets not only into the Hyleg but the Apheta and Anareta as well. While the discourse on the Hyleg goes all the way back to Ptolemy, there are so many interpretations on what constitutes the Hyleg and how to calculate Hylegiacal places that I abandoned trying to pursue this field long ago. However I might pull out some of my old research and see if I can at least try to build a framework that others might use to pursue the topic.
Lastly I would like to say that astrology has many schools of thought. Like any other discipline, astrology is full of those who hold differing points of view. One of the things I use as a teaching tool is to introduce these different views to my students. I have even had classes that consisted of myself and other astrologers debating our points of view. Just because I believe I am right doesn't mean I am not open to being persuaded that I am wrong. I have opinion change many times in the course of such a debate, I have also changed a few other minds as well. Hell, I have even found myself having to unconvince a friend or two after I have come to see a sounder point of view. To me the civil debate of apposing views is the healthiest way to advance the science and art of astrology.
