Too bad Staples is an hour's drive from here. :(

We are scrambling to get Gideon's physicals, school shopping and school forms all in order. We are also scrambling to move his bedtime up to a proper time for school and we JUST got him fully potty trained.

Crazy does not begin to cover it.

I presume the first years are the most chaotic.

Kohl's looks promising for us. My older son, age 15, already found a couple of themed T-shirts for under $10 each. I have Kohl's charge and with the newest catalogue I received an extra 30% off this week. I told both boys that they could pick out a pair of new sneakers this week at Kolh's. Sneakers are very expensive, especially for my teenager, they run $50- $80. The extra 30% off will help. My young son is heading to middle school and wants a more grown up backpack. That will come from LLBean becuase they are some durable. I have an LLBean Visa card and earned $30 in coupon money, so that will off set the cost of the backpack.
I won't buy new jeans until after school starts, my boys are growing so fast, I don't dare buy them before they really need them. It is generally warm enough thru September for shorts.

We hit the JCPenney summer clearance a few weeks ago and I got a TON of stuff for 97 cents apiece. Mostly shorts and shirts. Otherwise, I just need to mail in DD's preschool registration packet, which I'm already a month late with. Oops. Everything else is done!

Our school preparations include mailing off my oldest son's packet to his middle school to register him for JumpStart week that begins on Monday. It's a pretty neat program they have for a week before school starts where they do activities at the school while learning about it and they also get to go on field trips.

Our next step is to do our 'trying on clothes' ritual which consists of us spending an hour or so in the boys' bedroom trying on clothes. Whatever my oldest son has grown out of goes to my middle son and anything he's grown out of goes to our toddler. Then we decide what is needed for the school age kids and I scope out the ads and plan our school clothes shopping attack!

Next on the list is to visit the schools to see the schedules and make sure we know if the bus stops are still the same, then get haircuts going and we're set to go!

We bought a lot of small folders last month when Staples had a special sale. Some were 1 penny each for a week, then the next week they were 15 cents, normally they were 45 cents each. We no longer need to buy backpacks but we do always have to buy a lot of paper, special pens and pencils, erasers and art supplies. Staples usually has a lot of great bargains this time of year.

I'll be back at 9pm if I can!

My mom purchases some supplies when they are under $1 at various stores. I wait until orientation day to buy most things, since the teachers always hand me a slightly different list than the one they send home over the summer for supplies. I save re-usable items from the year before (colored pencils are often still fine, just need sharpening).

I would be here but 9 may be late for me depends on how things go tonight. I have not gotten a good night sleep in about a week! Summer is almost over and time to go shopping for clothes for the kids. I got most of their school supplies already.

My little guy began kindergarten this year, it was quite a long list. I was so excited I started shopping for school supplies before I got the list. Who knew there were so many different sized boxes of crayolas and that it mattered what size box you bought. I bought the 24 box ( six of them) the list asked for the 16 box. I donated all the extra supplies and there were quite a few to the school. They were happy to have them. I would love to win the books as we are on a reading marathon for school. The class has set a pretty large goal and we are determined to help meet it.

Now that my youngest child is in college, I don't get to go school shopping anymore. If you have a child who doesn't want to take time to eat breakfast, buy drinkable yogurt, fruit and cereal or granola bars that can be consumed on the way to school.

I'm popping in again because I think the baby may need her bottle around the time of the actual chat!

Other ways to save on school supplies . . . often teachers ask for way more than your child needs. For instance, ours ask for silly amounts like 4-8 DOZEN pencils (yes, I'm serious -- this is yearly). My 4 school age kids wouldn't go through that many all together in a school year. I give them 1 dozen to start. Same with loose leaf -- they don't need 4 packs right at the start of the year! I then usually send in fresh supplies in January after winter break, to keep the kids in what they need and to help out the teachers.

My son starts 2nd grade the day after Labor Day. I've already packed his backpack with his school supplies and have it ready to go!

I got some great deals on school clothes and supplies, posted articles about them too!

His list wasn't too bad this year either, all managable. Most items I got on clearance after school started last year and I stocked up! So, I didn't have to purchase but a couple things for this school year!

I am a huge fan of the JC Penney clearance sale in August - September.....you just can't beat 75 percent off, and when they have the 10 dollar coupons of it really makes back-to-school shopping a lot easier.

We did alot of our shopping at staples and walmart this year. Walmart had a wonderful deal on theme books .5 cents. I really stocked up as I use them for all my writing. In fact I never leave home without one because you just ever know when inspiration will strike. We also got a great deal on crayola crayons, I bought lots of those and Crayola markers at .88 cents. This weekend we will be lunch box shopping. We are in our second week of school and it has become apparent that my little guy does not like school lunch. I popped in and joined him for lunch one day last week; all I can say is I don't blame him.

Since my husband is working seven days a week from early morning to late night, I have not been able to take advantage of all the great free or 1 cent deals, but I found that our local Publix had some great deals, which I could get, when I did the grocery shopping. They seemed to add something new every week, and I almost have everything. They had the marble notebooks for 33 cents a piece. Elmer's glue at 33 cents a piece, fisker's scissors at 1.25 each, three packs of 10 pencils for 1 dollar etc.

Since it's almost time for the kids to return to classes. After the hectic summer round of holidays, sports, playing in the sun, or just plain "hanging out," my kidswill be taking advantage of the next couple of weeks - depending on what date school reconvenes in your area - but we are gradually introducing routine back into the family .

I bought stuff when Staples had their one cent sale last month. I took my husband and we each bought stuff. I will give it to any of the kids on my school bus who can't afford to buy pens, pencils, folders, binders, paper, etc.

I also bought some clothes for my granddaughter during the tax free weekend. I even bought her a lunchbox and a reusable water bottle so she can start pre-school.

We're going to be hitting up Payless, Goodwill, Forman Mills, and some of the department stores to look for clearance items. Fortunately, grandma is going to give the kids a bit of school clothes money because right now we can't afford it.

I wish we had a program in our area for the backpack and supplies thing- that sounds like a big help!

I love the ideas of uniforms! I think all schools should make it a rule.

Apryl I pack foods that have a longer shelf life without refrigeration, such as bread, granola bars, trail mix, popcorn, chips, raw vegetables (such as carrots and celery), fresh or dried fruit, soy beverages (and other aseptically packaged drinks such as milk or juice boxes and bags), beef jerky, peanut butter, or nuts

There is no fridge at our school either! there are SO many kids if you think about it. A fridge wouldn't be big enough and then they would have to find them, etc! I don't think any public school has a fridge for kids to store their lunches in!

Bridget that is so nice of you to offer. I only need two more shirts though, and I think he's got enough. I really appreciate the offer though.

Samantha, I think uniforms can be a good thing and a bad thing. On one hand it makes all the kids the "same" but on the other hand, each child is unique. So.....

I think my son will have warm lunch at school. I am hoping we can get reduced price lunches, and although I doubt it will be healthy (I remember school lunches as being pizza or curly fries), but he eats healthy at home, so hopefully it will make up for it.

The school where I work has a fridge for the kids to put their lunches in for those that bring them, which isn't many.

Uniforms would certainly make clothes shopping easier.

Does anyone have any restrictions as to what foods your kids can bring to school? I know some of the schools here have no peanut butter, and no home cooked food rules.

Bridget- That's exactly how I feel about it. I think that's what makes the world work is when we all do what we can even if it doesn't cost much it may make a huge difference in someone elses life.

Marsha- I don't know but I don't think a fridge for students is a big concern for them, they are in the process of building a brand new school. Maybe that one will have a fridge for the kiddies. I did notice that the teachers all bring their lunch from home.

I know that stores like Wal-Mart carry those freezer packs that you can freeze and put in the lunch boxes. You might consider getting some of those because they will stay cold longer in the newer lunchboxes.

No food restriction for lunch here --- only if bringing snacks for the classes. They have to be store bought and in packeages for allergy/safety reasons. No homemade snacks for class parties.

But my son can bring anything in his lunch! He eats hot lunch most times but does like to take lunch on occasion!

Samantha, I was very pleased to discover that my son has school uniforms. I think it will ease the pressure on us for a while, he can wear all his surfer stuff at home or at the beach. His school has several colors shirts and polos you can choose from, and we can buy them at any store, which makes it more affordable.

Thanks April! I didn't know about that. I'll check into it.

And wow, no peanut butter? I guess it's because of nut allergies and all that- but I used to love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in my lunch when I was a kid.

I understand the "unique" part but also kids (as in teens) spend so much time being "unique" like everyone else. I say let their personalities shine not their clothes. It was always so hard finding the "perfect" outfit and shopping... my poor mom :) LOL

Great Ideas April and samantha, Thanks!- He does love peanut butter and he loves crackers. In fact he isn't very fond of sandwich bread. The list of what he won't eat is three times longer than that of what he will eat.

At the school I work at Apryl, all the teacher lounges and office have fridges for the teachers and staff. Not for the kids, though. I have never been to a school that had a fridge for the kids and their lunches simply because the kids change classes so often that it would be a huge task trying to keep up with all those lunches with the fridge door opening and closing at the beginning and end of of each class so the kids could tote their lunch to the next class.
