I will admit it I am the typical mom. In my eyes, and in my heart, my kids are the smartest, brightest, most awesome people on the planet. Especially with one girl and four boys, my daughter is a princess and don't you dare tell her or I otherwise. At the age of two she was writing letters on the sidewalk when her playmates were scribbling, she knew the sounds of every letter (thanks to the Leap Frog Talking Letter and Talking Words videos I admit). Yet, by the time she was starting Kindergarten she was only reading a few basic words, and had no intrest in even trying to read something she didn't know. She did fine in class and got by great, but I knew that she wasn't doing as well as she could.
Now stop, I'm not trying to raise a baby genius or anything like that, but I do know when she is trying and when she is not. Thanks to a great teacher who always had good ideas for simple little activities that took really no time, but kept her interested in reading. I started becoming more motivated to read with her too. Not just a t bedtime, but in the car she has her Bob Books that are easy for her to read on her own, while waiting at appointments we always carry books instead of toys. Even while I am folding laundry I can help her read, and sometimes she even helps me with the laundry too!
I am a Work at home mom, I work as an independant contractor and Virtual Assistant, and run my own website JamieWagers.com . I also still have two young children at home, help lead a Daisy Scout Troop, and do all those mom jobs and errands making sure everyone has what they need and are where they need to be. I am busy, but there are so many times when I can just take a few minutes to sit down with one of the kids.
Throughout the day I will just stop whatever I am doing and grab one child and we will sit and read a book together, it's random so it's a suprise, and it's quality alone time, even if just or a few minutes. Each child enjoys the individual attention, and now even my daughter is now reading whole books on her own because she enjoys it and now has the confidence to try.
