My baby is sick

My son is 22 months old and is sick today. His fever was 101.3 last time I checked (about 2 hours ago). He is miserable. He doesn't want to eat or drink anything. He will drink a little pedialyte, but that's it.

I know it may sound unbelievable, but this is the first time he has ever been sick. He has never run a fever before. He's normally unbelievably healthy. So this is really hard on him and me both. He woke up at 2 am and started crying and calling for me. I went in and he was burning up. He didn't have enough energy to climb out of his bed, so I picked him up and tried to get him to drink something and take some tylenol. He stayed awake until almost 5 and cried the entire time. He kept saying "I ick" I don't know if he was saying I'm sick, or I feel icky, but either way, it made me feel helpless.

He slept until 9 am and got up and drank a bottle of pedialyte but didn't eat anything. He was back asleep by 11.

I'm sure a lot of you have dealt with sick kids. I'm new to this, though! Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should feed him, or what will help him feel better?

Oh hugs to you both! It's rotten when they are sick and you can't really do too much. Keep him on liquids don't worry about eating just make sure you are getting liquid in him and he's going potty regularly. For a really bad fever give him a cool bath, keep him on tylenol and fluids that's about all you can do. Call the doc if the temp get's higher or there are any other signs. E-Mail me if you have questions etc. If he can eat they recommend things like banana's, crackers, rice things that are not too heavy or acidic.

Keep a good eye on his fever, and alternate between giving him tylenol and motrin. Tylenol can be given every 8 hours, Motrin can be every 6 hours. What you do is give him Tylenol, then 4 hours later, motrin, then 4 hours later, tylenol, and stay on a 4 hour rotating schedual.

When he feels warm, give him a cool damp washcloth to hold against his face. Make sure to keep him drinking fluids, even if it's only a sip here or there. You might also want to try some liquidy foods- soup broth, applesauce, even popscicles if he'll take em.

If you notice he's not urinating much, and hasn't been drinking, get him into a doctor, because it's very easy for babies to become dehydrated.

wow... you are VERY lucky that this is the 1st time he has been sick!!!! My youngest child suffered from 13 ear infections & bronchitis by the time she was 3, she also had asthma.. which sent her to the doctor many times, allergic reactions & pink eye! So you are amazingly lucky!!!

Has he had anything other than the fever? My daughter has had fevers that within a day would break with no other symptoms. A cool rag on the head, some juice or cold water are always good for a fever =)

coping with a sick child can be overwhelming...fisrt thing first you need to get the fever down or stable and keep your son as cool as possible... your son may have a viral infection, or sore throat or a cold.so i suggest taking him to a doctor to get the reassurance that you have nothing to worry about and put your mind at ease. another thing try getting him to take some fluids no matter how small. try giving fluids like soups and juices to him by the spoon at close intervals. as i like to say feed a cold and starve fever... he needs to keep up his strength to fight whatever is in his system. another thing that helps is eating a banana or two. i hope he likes bananas...or anything that is high in potassium and vit k. hope your son feels better soon...

My little guy is back to normal. He has an amazing immune system! Thursday was really the only day he was sick. Friday he was back up playing and happy. Saturday we went ahead and got pictures done, and he smiled and was happy in them.

Yesterday he even went out and played in the snow for about 5 minutes! He kept asking if he could, and we finally gave in, since it was warmer (20 degrees) than it had been all week. We put his snowsuit and boots on him and away he went. He had fun.
