That is weird!

Ok I just read the whole article & freakin' give me a break! People read into things TOO much! It's so lame! I think adding Elmo was a mistake. I won't let my kid watch Elmo (well Elmo in Grouchland...) because he is a little whiney thing & he is a bit bratty. So yeah no Elmo in our house. I would be interested in seeing what the DVD has to show. ;o) Maybe I will check out YouTube & see if someone has posted anything.

Yes, I saw this when I was logging on to Yahoo. Perhaps it's a marketing ploy. I don't think we had Sesame Street on much in my parent's house. My youngest sister was born in 1965 and this article mentioned 1969, so maybe so. Both of my sisters and I started paying attention to Sesame Street in 1984 when we all babies.

Ok, so Oscar was grouchy. My son, at 18 months, thought that was hysterical. Yes, the Cookie Monster ate too many cookies. So? We used that as a teaching moment.

So here I am scratching my head and wondering if I shouldn't buy these just to take another look.

Yikes. I guess I'm glad I didn't know what I was watching when I was a kid!

I grew up with Sesame Street, and I never developed an addiction or depression or whatever it is they think is harmful about Sesame street. I was talking about this with a friend earlier and we agreed that it seems like too many parents (the ones who are raising such a fuss about shows like this) are relying on tv to raise their kids, so they get upset when they actually have to explain something. The old Sesame Street was a learning TOOL, not the teacher, like I'm sure some people would like it to be.

It's hilarious and sad, all at the same time.

This just sounds like more politically correct rubbish. Because I wanted to be an elementary teacher while still in high school, I watched the early Sesame Street shows and never saw a problem. It wasn't until just a few years ago that I found out Teletubbies could make me Gay. Can you imagine my shock knowing the Teletubby I had for my second childhood was going to cause me to become Gay. I told me wife she would have to start wearing boxer shorts and she asked why and I told her the Teletubby was making me Gay. Of course she sent me to the detox center, the Betty Ford institute and to the store to get some Ben & Jerry's ice cream with a strict warning not to get anything with marshmellows in it. Thankfully, I was cured and during the book burning bonfire for macho men only, we burned all of our Teletubbies and sang the song YMCA without touching of course. Now I am back to being abnormal, but was told by a lady in Washington State holding carving knives that I was born on Thanksgiving Day. Now I realize why my parents called me their little butterball. I'm a turkey. Gooble gooble. My feathers are ruffled and I'm having a bad hair day.

I wasn't born until the 80's, but my oldest sister was born in 1970. She watched Sesame Street, and she turned out just fine. Her mom (or my mom if she was at my parents' house) explained things to her, like all parents should. I haven't seen the original episodes, but I seriously doubt they were that bad. They probably weren't any worse than a lot of other shows that we watched.

No matter what we are watching, if my son has questions, I answer them.

lol William, did you ever watch a movie with Kevin Kiline, Joan Kusack, and Matt Dillon called In & Out? Kevin Kline plays a teacher who is gay and there's a scene where he's listening to a self-help tape to try to "de-gay" himself. It challenges him to listen to some old disco type song (might have been Gloria Gaynor or something, can't remember) and not dance to it, but he can't resist and winds up doing a really over-the-top dance to it. That scene is hilarious. Your post reminded me of that lol.

Carla, same here, my parents spent time WITH me watching shows and doing things OTHER than watching tv, and I do the same with my girls. I know there are a lot of people out there who are limited by time in their lives, but really, what can that time be better vested in, than our kids?

Haven't seen the movie you mentioned, but I rarely watch movies.

Well, I have to admit that I like some (and I put major emphasis on *SOME*) of the kids shows today, like Dora and Max & Ruby, but seriously - how much worse can Burt & Ernie be than Spongebob or Fairly Oddparents? At least Sesame Street taught about words, letters, numbers, and - God forbid - acceptance of other people and their differences. All Spongebob does is run around blowing bubbles, chasing jellyfish, and annoying Squidward with (might I add, equally sexually ambiguous friend) Patrick.

*shrug*

I think people just like to gripe.
