The Boo Cake is one of our other Halloween traditions and one that the kids remind me of weeks in advance -- when is it time to make the Book cake is a regular refrain all through October :-) The cake itself is not as important -- it can be pretty much any cake you like -- decorating it is the most important part according to my kids.
We usually make a chocolate pudding cake (2 packages of Instant pudding, 4 serving size) plus 3-1/2 cups milk and 3 cups whipped topping which has been thawed) with 1/2 a package of crushed up oreo (or similar) cookies added in. You put this mixture in a 13x9 inch pan and sprinkle the other 1/2 of the crushed oreo cookies on top. But as I said you can use another kind of cake if you prefer with a chocolate icing, etc. I just happen to really like this one because I don't have to even bake it :-)
Once the cake is ready I turn the kids loose to decorate. Since is ours is a "Boo" cake we always have ghosts -- spoonfuls of whipped topping with mini-chocolate chips eyes/nose. We use the milano cookies as tombstones and write little messages on them with decorating gel. The kids add candy pumpkins and sometimes other things like a plastic black cat, etc. As they get older they get more creative I've noticed. And before eating we always take a picture for posterity :-) You can see the Boo cake in the icon for the group (I tried to upload a picture with the article but my dial-up connection is not cooperating!).
