June 2006: What is blooming for you now?

Aside from one lonely flower on only one of the potted geraniums, nothing is blooming for me now. The Sweet Peas are finally up and looking for something to climb, the Birch tree is rebounding from the replanting shock, but everything else seems content to absorb the sun and leaf out.

In Duluth peonies have just started; Salvia May Night is looking wonderful; irises are in bloom. Doronicum is looking windblown, but still going strong. Ornamental strawberries are are perky. The forget-me-not is peeking in and around the fernleaf bleeding heart, making a wonderful, if inadvertent, color combination. Of course, Duluth and the North Shore are awash with lupines in the ditch. Betany is looking great, and bleeding hearts are still hanging on.

Daylilies & some asiatic lilies are in full bloom. Honeysuckle blooms all summer long. Goats beard. Delphiniums. Lamium & lamiastrum. Red bee balm is just getting going. Salvia. Endless summer hydrangeas (2nd year for 1 plant, 3rd year for the other, and they are GORGEOUS), shrub roses, valerian, sundrops.

Ah, Lupines. I have tried and tried to grow them, with no success. Apparently they like "cool sun" (an oxymoron if ever there was one), so the north shore provides perfect conditions. When my husband & I drove up the north shore on our honeymoon he had to endure constant comments from me about how unfair it is that they grow with wild abandon there with no care whatsoever, but simply will not cooperate in my garden, even though I've tried both sunny & partly shady locations.

My ladyslippers are done blooming (2 pink showy ladyslippers & 1 yellow ladyslipper). Unfortunately one of the pink ones appears to be dying - very little came up this year and there were no blooms, whereas in the past I've had 5 or 6 stems.

Some plants can break your ♥ [sniff].
