At midnight on Dec. 31, hundreds of millions of pages of secret documents will be instantly declassified, including many FBI cold war files on investigations of people suspected of being Communist sympathizers.

The New York Times reports today on an act signed into law by Prseident Clinton in 1995

Abbie Hoffman, the victim of the CoIntel program operated by the FBI to discredit him, might finally get some justice, along with so many others.

This is a good step. Being able to scrutinize history more closely should help us learn how to address the future better.

I wonder how much of this material was worthy of being classified in the first place.

The declassification of Gov't files opens the door to viewing with the 20/20 vision of hindsight. At the time of many of the actual events those in power were veiwing with alarm, based in fear and misinformation, for the good(?) of the country. I would hope that in our democracy we would strive to utilize the information to better understand the present situations and avoid the trauma of declassification of our mistakes by our Great-great-grandchildren.

These revelations work both ways; from the disclosure of the Venona transcripts we find that Alger Hiss was in fact a GRU agent.

Speaking of the GRU, we also found out that a rather rabid professor of Chicano studies at the University of Minnesota by the name of Gilberto Lopez, was employed by the Soviet GRU.

Mr. Lopez led an interesting life, recruited by a communist youth group at 17, he was trained in Cuba, worked for years for the GRU, and is now a member of the Mexican legislature for the communist party.
