Describe Your Oldest T-Shirt

January 16, 2009 09:18 PM EST (Updated: January 17, 2009 06:51 PM EST)

You know, I never gave this much thought until today.  I threw on a t-shirt, red, worn and comfortable.  These days, I've become the Queen of Comfort.  That's more important to me than anything.  When I feel good, I look good!  The husband looked at my red t-shirt and said, "Oh wow, that t-shirt is 19 years old!"  Here's a picture of this t-shirt and it says:

Twenty Years

Isla Vista, California Feb. 25, 1970

and Still Burning 1970 - 1990

This isn't my oldest t-shirt - I have a few others from concerts but they are so small, I can't fit into them now!  Wait, a thought just popped into my brain.  On the seats of my 1970 VW Bug, I have some t-shirts I used as seat covers.  I'll check them out soon and let you know what they are all about!  Thanks and I do want to hear your t-shirt story.  Salud

Mariana - Long gone - they wouldn't even fit on one boob now.

Love this picture and could you please get a picture of yourself sitting in that rock with a hat on. I think that would be fabulous.

Got rid of most of my old t shirts last time I cleaned the closet. I am wearing my oldest sweatshirt right now that's 17 years old.

All my tee shirts are holey. That's my story. Sad but true.

My two very most favorite tee shirts are a Peter Pan tee shirt from a play my brother was in and the other one had a couple of angels on it. I can still wear the Peter Pan tee shirt. Don't even know where the angels went. Perhaps someone borrowed it.

Mine is white with black lettering and I bought it out of rolling stone magazine in 1985 it says:

DAMM

Drunks Against Madd Mothers.

You dont know how many times I had to rescue that thing from the garbage...everyone tries to throw it away.

It's chilly up here...I'm wearing a sweatshirt from a fund-raising auction...that was in 1996. I do have some old, old T-shirts. I cleaned out a lot, but I bet the oldest left is 19 years old...it has the paint handprints of my middle daughter on it ... back when she was one-year-old!

Great photo, Mariana! I haven't worn T-shirts in years .. I'm much too, um ... "well-endowed" ... I look better in tailored shirts. I love to wear denim work shirts around the house ...

I remember a T-shirt I had in 1974 that promoted Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine, popular and cheap back then ... I had another one with gigantic red smoochy puckered lips ... weren't those the days?! I think I still have those T-shits packed away in a box in the attic ... wish they still fit!!!! Hah!

Marianne - I have tubs in my garage filled with stuff - I can't wait to start organizing stuff this spring - it should be fun - I'll probably make pillows out of my good ones. I can carry them over to Isabel and enjoy them there - ! Tailored shirts don't fit me - the buttons pop open.

Ellie - awww that's a sweet one - amazing how quickly time flies by huh!

Lori - oh dear, that's funny - more later. Salud

Mariana, you look so cute in your t-shirt. I have some many t-shirts with holes, but I can’t give them up. I just can’t. I have a t-shirt with Binky the Alaskan Polar Bear that attack a woman at the zoo. There was a picture of him with the woman’s shoe in his mouth. Don’t worry she lived…as for the frat boys who tried to tease Binky they didn’t fair so well…one word, castrate.

I am on the horizon of a famous “Sign Post” in the road trip called “Married Life”. You see, I KNOW I had a tee shirt, all tattered and torn, on the bottom of the “Used only if Washing Machine was broken” pile. I just can’t find it is all! I’m equally sure my wife would not throw it away without consulting me first……….would she?
Screaming from the other room across the hall to be heard over the TV set,….. “Honey? What ever happened to……….” Ahhh, It’s not the destination one looks forward to on the journey, It’s the path taken that one decides to travel down that sprinkles ones memories with smiles. AMEN

One day my collegiate baseball coach was cleaning out old baseball uniforms and said that we could have anything in the box that we wanted. No one want any of the stuff because they dated back to the 1950s. This stuff was 20 years old at that time. I chose two wool jerseys circa 1958. I will wear them once a year in the spring, usually when I come off of my 40 day Fast at Lent.

I don't have an oldest one. I always either throw my away or give to someone or goodwill and then replenish the supply. All I wear these days are men's t-shirts and black, or navy, occasionally beige or green stretch pull on pants with pockets. I keep my cell phone in one pocket and the key to my cat cottage in the other. I love this outfit! I have never been more comfortable in my life. As a child I had to wear dresses all the time, and many times these were very stiff material and might have even been starched. I had to wear the light pink or yellow dresses for Easter that were beautiful but always uncomfortable. I kept telling my mother these clothes "hurt" me. She would not listen. I had to wear what she said. I had no choice in what I wore each day of my life until I was a very older child. I can't remember exactly when, even as a teenager, my mother purchased the clothes without my consent or approval and placed them in my closet. I had choice from the closet but that was it. I was miserable as a child in the clothes she made me wear. I really felt like it was part of her abuse toward me. Anyway....as an adult and when I worked in offices, I had to dress however the rest of them dressed. Most of the time this was fairly casual, and finally I was able to try on clothes before I purchased them, but still because of all those uncomfortable things I was "made" to wear as a child, I would make bad choices and end up not being able to wear what I bought. Now today......I am the person I want to be at least in clothing, the rest of me I am still working on and solving. I have a few other clothes I wear out to the doctors and some for special occasions.

Let me get this straight. I am now in the process of cleaning out the garage. Within said garage is a garbage pail or 2, half a dozen black GIANT glad bags, 3 or 4...well you get the idea. The words of wisdom was , "Leave the wife’s stuff alone old man". Am I correct?

Most of my old t-shirts are long gone. Can't fit into them anymore. I will tell you about the t-shirt I'm wearing right now though. It's an aqua colored one and it reads, "All stressed out and no one to choke." I saw it one day and thought I need that shirt. It was a cheapo.

I have one tee shirt from the late 1970's from Hallmark that they pulled from the shelves the day I bought it. It was a Halloween novelty shirt with the insignia of 'Transylvania University' on the front. They had to take it off the market for 'copyright infringement'. They never got permission from the real Transylvania University in Pennsylvania to use the name. E pluribus bitem. I 'customized' it...cut off the sleeves with a steak knife and made a small slit down the front of the neck. I still wear it on occasion.

I have a 2 story T-shirt.
On the front it says "I eat only the best"
On the back is the name of a German restaurant in Chicago.
Story #1:
One time we were in Chicago and we stopped there at an off hour. As we approached the entrance I saw a sign with their hours posted and we were late. I had slipped the T shirt on and we walked in. I asked if it was too late to be served and the hostess said, "I eat only the best. Come on in!" We had a wonderful meal. She could have said "No!"
Story #2:
I was walking into a stock car race. A young woman who looked nice in her T shirt and was one of the reasons people think that bluejeans look sexy was walking toward me with this big grin on her face. As she brushed past me she said, "Follow me!" It was then that I realized that I was wearing that T shirt!
I hope Story #2 doesn't get this thread flagged.

In 1992, I took my kids on a vacation to Disney World. I believe it was at MGM Studios where I found my all time, favorite tee. Patterned into the weave of the fabric are Rhett and Scarlett, lost in the classic, passionate embrace.

Gone With the Wind is my all-time favorite movie. I wore that tee-shirt with everything, for many years. It finally started looking a little threadbare, so it was relegated to being a sleep shirt. Like all good tee-shirts should, it's stretched along with my body. It's my favorite thing to sleep in, besides Kevin's arms.

I have a tshirt made after the '69 Woodstock Festival in Bethel NY by an artist in Woodstock, NY. It has a large local map on it with two big arrows. One says "You are here" (pointing at Woodstock on the map) and the other says "Festival was here" (pointing at Bethel, 60 miles away!) I wear it every mid-August as a reminder to all the lost people returning to "Woodstock" to relive the psychedelic experiences of their youth.

I have a formerly navy tee which weathered hurricane flooding many, many years ago. (It was the only thing in a bottom drawer. It is naturally tie-dyed, with shades of pink and red throughout now, I guess from the sea water. It's very cool... and probably at least eighteen years old. Other than that, my oldest is a Counting Crows shirt, full of holes, from the late nineties.

Connie - it's wonderful that you can now wear what you want! I always dictated what I should wear once I was old enough to figure things out - luckily, for me I had an aunt who made all of my clothes from pictures or designs she and I worked on...I still have some of those clothes - most of them - of course, I can't fit into anything now - so next picture of me will be thinner! I love old T-shirts once they're perfectly worn in. I have a bunch of old ones from concerts because I make it a point to buy one at every show I've ever been to (along with keeping the stub). My oldest though, is from my very first job when I was 14 (15 years ago). I kept it more for nostalgia than anything. I haven't actually worn it since I left the job! lol

Mariana, Looks like you should start a T-shirt museum site on Gather... "My Life in T-Shirts."

My favorite t was circa 1970. I was circa 12. It was a reconfigured stars and stripes. Blue chest and long blue sleeves with a star on the chest. The bottom of the shirt was red and white stripes. My love for it was a strange thing. I bought it in a head shop on the corner of Bronson and Sunset in LA. (We used to sneek into the back of theater a block or so away to see first runs of Harold and Maude, Clockwork Orange, and Brewster McCloud.) I thought the shirt made some sort of political statement, though at that age, I had no idea what a politic was. When I got rid of it, it was like shedding a revolting skin: 'I can't believe I ever wore that!'

Two other shirts that were amazing were shirts I silk-screened in art class, eighth grade. One was Leon Russell and Marc Benno from the cover of Asylum Choir II. It came out beautifully and I broke the press making many copies for people who had no idea who either of these men were. The other silk-screen I did that came out nicely if not as intricate and compelling as Russell/Benno was a head of Hendrix. This also created a brief flurry of demand.

I never bought concert shirts. If I had, I would have wanted the offbeat shows that were incredible, in part because the audiences were sparse... Tom Robinson Band, Graham Parker, John Lee Hooker. I don't recall there being shirts in the lobbies of those shows.

There was a long run of Sprinsteen shows to get me through my dating years but I never 'wore' Springsteen. (I designed but never printed a Springsteen shirt: It had a small image (think Izod alligator) of Bruce in full leap, one arm up ready to slam out a chord, and the quote in small print above it, "I ain't here on business baby, I'm only here for fun." Boy, that makes me want to hear Rosalita!)

Another t-shirt love were my Enterprise Fish Company t-shirts when I worked there as a cook, busboy, and kitchen manager ('77 - 82). It was my time to belong. I see people at work now wearing the company logos on their shirts. I do have a company baseball cap, but I'm not enough of a belonger to warrant the logo shirts.

Which is what it used to be about: belonging. Things have changed now. My kids wear mostly random stuff with no meaning, though Madi wears the Sex Pistols, Beatles, Blondie, The Clash, and many other classics. But the belonging, the making a statement, seems less now. I sift through the racks at Buffalo Exchange and see a hundred striking, meaningless images. (Not that Russell/Benno was _meaningful_.)

One shirt I would wear now: Flight of the Conchords. If you haven't see their HBO show... Maybe it's just taken me all these years to understand how to be a fan. And if I were to design a new shirt for any band ever on the planet, I think I'd like to try Miles Davis. You know the pose.

My oldest shirt that was originally mine and that I still wear (to work out and sleep in) is my "I had my party at the Skateplace" t-shirt from my 9th birthday at the local roller skating rink. I'm 25 now. It's so soft and stretchy after 16 years! My sisters and I have also really enjoyed wearing some of my mom's old concert t-shirts from the late 70s.

A red t-shirt, 3X with a black Zenith lightning bolt advertising their long distance radios. Have had it for ages, a gift for ordering vacuum tubes from Antique Radio Supply. It used to be too small for me when I weighed over 350 lbs. Now it's a short moo moo, faded in some places, has holes and paint spots.

the oldest t-shirt I have is a concert t-shirt from the early 90's. Haven't worn it since the night of the concert and haven't washed it either (it's autographed).

the old sweatshirt I own and still wear is almost 14 years old.

My oldest T-shirt is not really all that old. It is from the 1988 Super Bowl. I still own my Air Force overcoat and cap. They were issued to me in 1958.

Nice photo.

David, you make me laugh - I still have my 8th grade graduation dress. It costs $13 from Wormser's Department store and that's the most I'd ever spent on a dress - guess it was money for turning 13. Bless my dad's heart. It was yellow and I treasure it! moth holes and all - size 3!!!
My dad kept his world war one uniform - I can't find it but have his campaign hat and other service related items - bullets - etc. Glad you kept your Air Force overcoat - must be a good one - does it still fit? 1988 Superbowl - well,I have a cap to match! Salud

You cracked me up with the VW seat covers. My lil' truck is 25 years old now, and has layers of T-shirts on the bucket seats. I haven't seen them in a few years, because my wife bought me some real seat covers and they are hidden now.
I'd say the oldest shirt I have is really a tank top like shirt (jersey?) from being on my High School Track Team. I swiped it as a souvenir when graduating. How I ever fit in that is a mystery, LOL. I guess that makes it about 38+ years old...
Take care.
PS- I still have a stuffed animal from the day I was born too... ;-)

This isn't clothing, but I have a florescent lamp that I've used constantly since I received it in 1961. I've never had to replace the bulb though at times it has been left on all night. Imagine, 48 years and still shining bright!

Stephanie, proud Maw-Maw to my 2 granddaughters, G Jan 18, 2009, 6:26pm EST
If you are the queen of comfort then I am the princess. My oldest t-shirt would be an old harley shirt I found at a garage sale several years back. My dh has offered to replace the t-shirt with another harley t-shirt bought brand new, but he has no clue.
I also still have the school tshirt from my senior year of high school and that was 84, yepz I am that darn old.
I hate dress clothes/shoes. The only pairs of shoes I own are crocs, slippers, tennis shoes and work boots.
My only pants apparel is sweats, pj pants, and jeans. I think you get the idea here.

MY comp check still isn't here and I have raised 7 different kinds of Billy heck from one end of this nation to the other with no avail. No mail tomorrow, so it won't be before tuesday at least. They are making me so upset and there's nothing that I can do about this. Thanks as always for being a friend and for leaving comments.

My oldest t-shirt is one that I got from my oldest sister. She passed several years ago and I will not give it up.

It is a over-sized tie-dyed shirt. It actually has a few pin holes in it, but I love it! I am not sure how old it is , but I have had it for over 10 years and it was pretty worn when she gave it to me.

You all are talking about old clothes. I have my First Communion Dress. That dress was from 1963. Both of my daughters wore that dress for their First Communions. My mother told me that she paid, what was then, "A LOT OF MONEY" for that dress. It cost her $12.00. She bought it at Foley's in Houston.

this story is a little sad, but... my mother's brother, mark, was killed in a car accident when he was 29. i was 12 at the time and living with her other siblings in my grandparent's house. mark has been living in maine at the time, and when his belongings were sent home, i took one of his tshirts because it smelled like him and made me smile. that t-shirt has got to be from the early 70s and i still cherish it to this day.

Oh STephanie - I know that you are beautiful in all your casual clothes - I've seen you before at my Book Signing - you looked pretty good then and then at my house - you know I truly don't notice folks clothes too much - not when their eyes shine and they have a happy outlook as you do. I know how p.o.'d you are about your check. Glad your boss has helped you out - generous man that he is. I hope everything gets back to normal for you. Thanks for telling me about your old harley shirt - yes, he doesn't have a clue if he doesn't know how much soul that shirt has and meaning it has for you and plus the comfort! Thanks my friend, blessings on this special day. Salud
