This week on Soundtracking: Independence Day Playlist
Just a quick one today as we're enjoying a holiday weekend by trying to relax - but the playist is 28 songs long, long enough for you to enjoy while you're having your barbeque or lougning by the poolside.

To me, independence day is a celebration of the spirit of independence - which means thinking for yourself and standing up against the injustices of your government. Is it possible to love your country and hate the policies of your government at the same time? I think so.
My father once told me that I was born in the greatest nation in the world - he really believed that. Maybe there was a time when that was true - but now? My great nation is under siege by politicians who don't care about her lands and about her people.
Here's hoping that the election year is a new beginning for us all, a time of change that'll make us all proud to be Americans.
Happy Independence day, America.
Playlist consists of:
1. When the President Talks to God - Bright Eyes
When the President talks to God,
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women's rights?
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike?
When the President talks to God?
2. America - Simon and Garfunkel
"Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together"
"I've got some real estate here in my bag"
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America
3. American Idiot - Green Day
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindf*ck America.
4. When the War Came - The Decemberists
With all the grain of babylon
To cultivate, to make us strong
And hidden here behind the walls
Are shoulders wide and timber on
'Til the war came
'Til the war came
5. This Land is Your Land - Woodie Guthrie
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
6. American Baby - Dave Mathews Band
If these walls came crumbling down,
Fell so hard to make us lose our faith,
From what's left you'd figure it out,
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day,
Stay, beautiful baby,
I hope you stay American, baby
American baby
7. It's a Hit - Rilo Kiley
Any chimp can play human for a day.
Use his opposable thumbs to iron his uniform
and run for office on election day
fancy himself a real decision maker
and deploy more troops than salt in a shaker.
8. Our Country - John Melloncamp
Well I can stand beside
Ideals I think are right
And I can stand beside
The idea to stand and fight
I do believe
There's a dream for everyone
This is our country
9. Natural Anthem - The Postal Service
I'll write you a song and it won't be hard to sing
it will be a natural anthem, familiar it will seem
it will rally all the workers on strike for better pay
and its chorus will resound and boost morale throughout the day
10. The Bank and Trust - The Elected
Well, she gets real mean when she's drunk
And she finally fell asleep, and I'm glad
She said, 'The only way you got as far as you did
Is 'cause of me. Your songs suck'
And I'm stuck in this American town
And the streets are full of snow
And the shops are closin' down
And the only friend I had here moved away
Went back to Dallas
Ran out of money
11. War (What is it good for) - Edwin Starr
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
12. Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just covering up
Born in the U.S.A.
13. Working Class Hero - Green Day
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so f*cking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
14. Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no
15. America, F*ck yeah! - Team America
America...
America...
America, F*CK YEAH!
Coming again to save the m_ f*cking day yeah,
America, F*CK YEAH!
Freedom is the only way yeah,
Terrorist your game is through 'cause now you have to answer to
America, F*CK YEAH!
16. Icky Thump - The White Stripes
Well, Americans:
What, nothin' better to do?
Why don't you kick yourself out?
You're an immigrant too.
17. Miss Fourth Of July - Bon Jovi
I used to believe but now it's just one day at a time
The circus is gone, it's all packed away
The clown's hat, the makeup's been packed in his case
So we wave goodbye to Miss Fourth of July
The queen of the roses has left us with nothing but thorns
Don't say we never tried, Miss Fourth of July
18. Love and War (11/11/46) - Rilo Kiley
All is fair in love and we're in love
Now that everybody's dead we can finally talk
Can vanity and happiness co-exist?
All the lovers we've taken in direct view of the enemy
And we shift each other's body to accept the bullet
and continue the pleasure, the treasures of battle
It's only for the for the wounded, the purple hearted
19. Independence Day - Elliott Smith
I saw you at the perfect place
It's gonna happen soon, but not today
So go to sleep, and make the change
I'll meet you here tomorrow
Independence Day
20. Young Americans - David Bowie
All the way from Washington
Her bread-winner begs off the bathroom floor
"We live for just these twenty years
Do we have to die for the fifty more?"
All night
He wants the young American
Young American, young American, he wants the young American
21. Blame Canada - South Park
Sheila: Times have changed
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Sharon: Should we blame the government?
Liane: Or blame society?
Dads: Or should we blame the images on TV?
Sheila: No, blame Canada
22. American Wife - Rilo Kiley
'Losing your brave', is that what he said?
The flag will still wave even after you're dead.
I'll be your American wife.
Like the eagle perched atop the globe,
We'll climb up above the smog and
Live in blissful ignorance
With a dog and a tv set.
We'll eat flesh 'til we're fatter than our friends.
23. 16 Military Wives - The Decemberists
Sixteen military wives
Thirty-two softly focused brightly colored eyes
Staring at the natural tan
of thirty-two gently clenching wrinkled little hands
Seventeen company men
Out of which only twelve will make it back again
Sergeant sends a letter to five
Military wives, whose tears drip down through ten little eyes
Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so
It's so!
24. American Woman - Lenny Kravitz
American woman, I said get way
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come hanging around my door
Don't want to see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
25. Ashes of American Flags - Wilco
The cash machine is blue and green
For a hundred in twenties and a small service fee
I could spend three dollars and sixty-three cents
On Diet Coca-Cola and unlit cigarettes
I wonder why we listen to poets
When nobody gives a f*ck
How hot and sorrowful
This machine begs for luck
26. Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Psychic spies from China
Try to steal your mind's elation
Little girls from Sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations
And if you want these kind of dreams
It's Californication
27. The Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix
(Insturmental)
28. Imagine - John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
