Next big thing -- or not? The genre known as "Grime" is a mad mix of hip-hop, drum-and-bass and dancehall music that sprang from East London in the early years of the decade, and some are already saying that its popularity has peaked.
Not so fast, said my guests this week, Mark Wheat and The Current's Music Director Melanie Walker -- who helped explain exactly what Grime is and what it sounds like, and shared some examples, including Wiley, Lady Sovereign, Dizzee Rascal and others.
We also pose this week's question: What was your first musician crush?

although it was a tie with Brian Setzer i believe.
bill - okay, i'm callin' you current DJs out here: i feel like every time i hop in my car y'all are playing 'freckle song' so i decided to check your archives today. sure enough, the current has played that song (at least) once every day this month, and never anything else by chuck prophet - those are KDWB kinda stats! i think we can all agree that 'doubter out of jesus' is at least as good as the 'freckle' tune. i think it's time to spread the love around a bit. cheers!
Little did I know.
Marc Bolan was my first crush. I remember snogging with my first girlfriend when I was 11. His single "Ride A White Swan"was playing over and over again in the background. That might have helped with the gender crossing in my subconcious. I remember reading that Marc wanted to have a sex change, so that he could marry his bongo player, but he later married Gloria Jones. That was the first time I'd heard that kind of thing and it has always stuck with me. Gender is a slippery thing. David Cassidy's on my crush list too, and Animal from the Muppets!
i gotta admit, i loved the album covers with Patti raising her arm over her head - i know many would say (& have said) "ewww!" - but it just seemed so raw to me.
& who can resist Bowie's mismatched eyes? saw him in "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" and that was it!
My 1st crush was Laurie Partridge (Susan Dey)of the Partridge Family...though I don't believe she was a musician at all. I think David Cassidy and Shirley Jones were the only real musicians on the show...no girl ever looked better in a poncho than Laurie Partridge!
Then Michael Steele from the Bangles. Must be something about bass players.
oh - & howabout Tina Weymouth?
Um.. no.. not a big fan of the Pixies/Breeders.
But do love Mick Karn from Japan. he's a master of the fretless bass. "Sons of Pioneers" is one of my faves of theirs.
My first "musician crush"? I guess that would have to be Barbara Streisand. When I was 10 or 11 I found a copy of Streisand Superman in my parents records. I never listened to the record but on the cover Barbara is wearing knee high socks, tighty whities and that too tight Superman t-shirt, oh god... The pictures inside the gatefold are permanently burned on my brain; particularly the last picture in the series... She's got her back to the camera, her butt cheeks show under her shorts and she's got a slight wedgie... Shit, I'm gonna have to find that record right now...
Men...no Chrissie Hynde or Jessica Simpson??
Had one on Chrissie Hynde during the early day of the Pretenders's. Thought her singing, "Precious" was pretty sexy!
