National Night Out in Minnesota (alt title: Get Ready to Rock the Block)

Minnesota Public Radio's The Current encourages everyone to Celebrate National Night Out:

It's summer, meaning it's also block party season in Minnesota. What better reason to have a block party than National Night Out, a chance to strengthen your community, meet your neighbors, and have a good time doing it.

The Current will feature music specifically for the party that night and offers some recipes courtesy the DJs if you're game.

Does your block host - and enjoy - a National Night Out party? (A better question might be, "Do you have your block party permit from your city yet?") Can you recommend any recipes or activities for the party? Will you "rock the block" with music?

in our neighborhood, we'd rock the block by ourselves. most of our neighbors are weekend people. the rest are elderly. i am so glad lillie's past listening to the wiggles. we'd choose jack johnson or some old school funk, which she just loves. what a hoot!

That sounds pretty funny and sweet, jessie. Do your weekenders and elderly neighbors connect, or is it one of those "wave when seen" kind of relationships?

Our street will be having an ice cream social, so I'll truly be chillin' with the nabes.

And I'm gonna bring a boom box so we can rock with Mary and Mark on The Current!

Don't think there will be any get-to-know-you games or icebreakers, although the build-your-own-sundae table creates opportunities for chit-chat. However it happens, it will be good to get people talking to one another. There hasn't been enough interaction in our street and its time to change that.

Sounds like it will be a good mixer. The things one adds to a sundae says a lot about them ;-)

Weather for various Minnesota regions looks like it might challenge some outdoor celebrations. Anyone have a back-up plan, or a neighbor with a big, empty garage?
