It's hardly worth noting that this coming weekend holds untold potential for fulfilling your lifelong dreams of seeing local music. But one show in particular caught my eye, and it's not just because the folks playing aremy favorite bands ever, (Superhopper, Malachi Constant, Falcon Crest, STNNNG , Chambermaids, Signal to Trust, and a few more). OK, it did catch my eye for that reason, but upon further investigation, it turns out that there are two things that are special about it. One, the show is taking place at two venues, one admission is all it takes, and you can hop freely back and forth between the Turf Club and Big V's. And the other, slightly more important reason is that it is a benefit show.
I've always thought it was a great idea to hold benefit shows, people get to see bands they like, and the money goes to some worthy cause. Not that these things happen all the time, but I have to admit that it's pretty cool for the band to forego any earnings that they might receive. I know a lot of bands don't have much money anyway--or perhaps the money's so negligible it doesn't matter.
Whatever the reason, I think it's fantastic. This particular show is going to help a friend of these bands, whose father is in need of a wheelchair accessible automobile. And that brings me to the "big ask": are you more likely to go to a show if you know your admission is going to a good cause? who says buying a band beer isn't a good cause? Do you give more than the suggested donation if it's a benefit show? Or do you worry the door guy is pocketing it?
