I was at Big V's in St. Paul on Saturday to see Half Fiction, Fighter Hayabusa, Switchboard and Red Telephone Dispatch. It was a great show, and I think that's due in part to the new PA system that they installed at the beginning of the month.
The sound at Big V's was never terrible per se, but I don't think people in bands ever had any monitors to hear how they sounded. If you can't hear you're out of tune, you probably don't know you are.
It also makes me think about how important it is to have a good sounding show, and how everyone will complain when a show sounds terrible, but when it sounds great, no one seems to think to thank the sound people at the board.
I could easily ask what are the worst shows, no doubt plenty of folks would have huge lists of bad sounding shows... but what is the best sounding show you've ever been to?

Okay, I don't have one but I have a generalization: in my faulty memory or experience I've noticed that rock-n-rollers have a higher percentage of bum-sounding shows. Classical Quartets, Choral performances, Tango groups all seem to invest in either a betterboard or are more conscious of the sound check. Heck, about 15 years ago I even attended a wedding with a Polka band in a space that should have sounded like beating wheeze in a can, but they arranged their system and settings carefully during the day and it sounded great to me.
