Awaiting the crocus

cold snowrain dances out my window,
pushes crocus further toward the mantle;

I await the hush,
when sunlight streams,
world stops,
holds its breathe a moment in eternity,
while the purple pupa
pushes through the canal
fertile earth, rich fecundity,
alas, the crocus,
but not the morrow.

not the morrow is right...started snowing down here right after supper and have already shoveled off the front porch twice...oh for a crocus now!
SUmmer will be here before you know it, then in the heat of the summer, we will be praying for winter, at least I will be.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring and Wednesday is the vernal equinox, so I'd say we're over the hump now.

We still have inches of snow from two days ago; it freezes at night and is snowing rain right now. Spring won't spring much here yet for a few more days. Other days, my crocuses bloomed in December.

We have crocus, pear trees and daffodils bloomin' in these parts Kathryn and tonight we're receiving a nice gentle rain....Springs a'comin I guarantee it.

I can definitely tell that you're waiting for spring. In San Diego, spring means cloudy, cool days. But, we don't have snow. I remember living in Detroit and really looking forward to the time when the temperature was at least 40 degrees out.

Pat, I do appreciate the differences down under. I visited Brisbane in April a few years ago, to a beautiful and hot autumn.


Today the sun is shining and there is no ice on the sidewalk. Being the first day of Spring, that is a harbinger of good things to come.

Beautiful! We i n New England have had a strange winter season. Though the winter resorts here in NH are benefiting, I for one am anxious for it to go. If not for the warm spell that began the melt down, I probably wouldn't complain. We got the taste of SPRING! Now I crave it!

Down in the nether regions of South Louisiana, our brief Spring season is currently in progress. All is beginning to bloom and all is beginning to sneeze. In the next two or three weeks, the Barataria Unit of the Jean Lafitte National Park, which is approximately eight miles due south of my home, will be filled with people. Usually serene for most of the year, the Coquille Bayou Trail will be overflowing with those who come to see the annual miracle of countless wild purple iris in full bloom in the midst of the swamp. It is truly a sight to behold.

On the downside, in about one month, the short spring will be over as we begin reaching the temperature and humidity that is considered mid-summer in northerly climes.

I saw my firsr crocus today in MA!! I'll post it.
We've had only snowdrops so far. However, we've been visited by cardinals and robins, blackbirds, and some wren-like little birdies all eagerly gobbling up the seed we put out for them.
Delightful poem, Katherine, and it does show your impatience, reflected by many more of us, I'm sure.

Well, the strong sun today is a good sign. Wonder who and what lurks beneath the snow covered flower beds? Is it my purple crocus? I hope so.

btw, if you are reading this, the recent article list has not changed in two hours. People do not seem to be able to publish articles. Just got an email about that, as well. Other problems on Gather right now, too.

Constant, I take it you are not a fan of the birds. Grackles can be a pest, but I do love Chick a Dees and Jays.

Minnesota still has much snow on the ground around my home. It will still be a week or two before anything is coming up. We have had robins this past weekend. That is a good sign of things to come. So are the garage sale notices in the paper.

Deb, oh yes, tropical Minnesota. Much like tropical New England. Still no crocuses today, have not seen or heard robins yet, but they are probably around somewhere.

Maybe a crocus or a robin tomorrow. Or next week.
