According to a report in The Hill, Edwards will withdraw from the race for the Democratic nomination today (1pm Eastern).
I'm sorry to see it happen, and I don't think it would have happened if there Clinton and Obama hadn't BOTH decided to run. Edwards would have given either of them a great battle, but when both started raising money hand over fist, it became clear that noone else was going to break thru.
I hope he plays an active role during the rest of this campaign - he is an asset to the Democratic party.
****
P.S. I think Edwards' supporters will be more likely to support Obama, rather than Clinton. BUT, I think tomorrow's TWO-PERSON DEBATE is going to be CRITICALLY IMPORTANT in that regard; they both will make a concerted pitch for those voters.
****
LATE UPDATE: Sen. Clinton is just on MSNBC, indicating that she hopes that he/his issues will play a role in her Administration if she is elected.

He received a warm welcome, but perhaps it wasn't enough to convince him he could get the necessary delegates. You've got to give him credit for braving the subzero wind chill and temperature last night, even though he may already have been close to making up his mind about dropping out.
I have met him twice and, honestly, when you see him and talk to him, he comes across as VERY genuine. I can't imagine getting into a presidential race WITHOUT taking pac money if you're ego is all that is at stake.
He is sincere. And THAT is a change we need. Desperately.
(BTW, it is great to chat here with a Rose AND a Rosa. I'm sure glad Gather put in that new update that allows us to choose who - specifically - can comment!!!)
I wonder where all those aimless Leftists will go now? I guess Obama is still reasonably Left enough for them..................so expect a migration of the homeless.
In the last poll that the media included him in, Edwards was the ONLY Democrat that could beat all Republican contenders, so we deep sixed him for them, so they wouldn't have to. How dumb can we get?
How dumb? Does the name Jimmy Carter answer that question? LOL
How about Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry?
We're the party of stupid, unelectable candidates, Ron. Suck it up.
"I am personally disgusted at the low intelligence of the American people . . . "
Another broad generalization considering the number of States that haven't yet had a chance to vote.

"You, nor I are in any way a part of the Democratic party, you imbecilic poser. Just STFU, if you even know how."
And that's coming from such a valiant warrior for the First Amendment.........LOL!
"Figured Bretboy would be celebrating. Another loser Bushiter produces bodily waste out of the wrong end of their body. What a surprise."
Ronnie, you know I'm always happy when another Leftist comrade is bumped. When will you Socialists get the clear message that Leftist Presidents were extinct after FDR died? Carter tried reviving Socialism, but its time had passed. Mercifully, Edwards saw the handwriting on the wall and bowed out. Now only the serious candidates remain.
Hey, don't get down, Ronnie................there's still Obama. He's Left enough for you, isn't he?
I do believe you have the gift of great insight.
I believe your face diaper is full. Does putting it in terms you understand help any?
I think your jaded view of Conservatives like me is clouding your vision. Review past recent comments and look at who is calling who names.
Four comments up : "moronic loser".
Fifteen comments up : "Imbeclic poser. Just STFU......".
Sandy, I don't expect you to answer this, since you're a hit-and-run artist.
Back to the topic of this article : John Edwards.
He's gone, and that's good. Now there's more oxygen for the real candidates. And more airtime to watch the Hill-Billy smear machine tear down Obama. I'm getting the popcorn ready............it should be interesting. I hope Obama puts up a good fight (even though I have no horse in this race).
That's a laugh, there are no other infant mentality jerks like you that upchuck your bile on a regular basis without any effort to think rationally.
Jaded views of Conservatives propagate like well-fed rabbits here on Gather. But isn't it better to talk about the topic of the article?
I mean, Edwards stunning announcement of withdrawal was unexpected, wasn't it?
Since Obama was just rated the #1 most Liberal Senator by the National Journal (a liberal publication) this past year, you have a new home, right?
