According to the BBC Al Gore, former Vice President, Oscar Winner for his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth", and co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, will not "make a fresh bid for the White House." This is undoubtedly unfortunate news to the reported 200,000 people who have signed on to the "Draft Gore" campaign. In an open letter, the campaign stated:
"There are times for politicans and times for heroes. America and the earth need a hero right now. Please rise to this challenge."
The campaign lauded Gore's "vision, standing in the world and political courage."
But Gore "is involved in another kind of campaign...a global campaign to change the way people think about the climate crisis." Acknowledging that it was a great honor to be awarded the Nobel for his climate campaigning he said, "Personally, it means the chance to be more effective in delivering the message of the climate crisis and solving it."
Although he won't be a candidate on the ballot, Gore's influence will carry some weight with many Americans during this election season. The Washington Post reports that he has "already met with Senators Barack Obama, Chris Dodd and former Senator John Edwards. " To supporters and others, Gore has never looked so good and it will be interesting to see who he endorses as the Democratic nominee.

And Al Gore has already displayed that he can not win the Presidency. We was against a hayseed politician who can't even speak clearly and with any intelligence and he lost.
But Stephen Tyrone Colbert is
It's SCIENCE. It's now OLD science. Who cares what anybody BELIEVES when it comes to science.
(I WAS feeling like a "Betty" today, thank you dear)
The actual definition of algorithms includes the desire to attain a desirable result. For sure, Al Gore is doing that. He's not merely a political champion; he could be one of our saviors. Imagine that. Or to paraphrase John Lenon: "Imagine there's no carbon emissions. It's easy if you care. No smog above us, below us only clean soil and water. Imagine all the people breathing clean air, living for this day and many more . . ."
Then again, we may not. The american people have a pretty well documented aversion to tough choices right up to and beyond the point that their indecision bites them in the ***.
I think Gore made a smart move.
I think he's doing what he wants to do already, and being very effective at it. Now, if only he would endorse Edwards, who has the best global warming plan and was recently endorsed by Friends of the Earth Action.
way for him to make a contribution. I look forward to whatever he does next.
I think Patry is right.
"At a time when the planet needs to unite as never before, who are we to keep him to ourselves?
At a time when the Presidency is diminished in moral stature as never before, who are we to insist he be constrained there?
Would the Civil Rights movement have been more effective if Martin Luther King had been President? He didn't impose his vision from a position of power; he led people to demand a better world. Change came not from the top down, but from the bottom up.
So Gore won't run? He will still speak. He will still lead.
The only difference is that more of the responsibility will be on us. Where it has always been.
I think we can work with this."
Who will take the POTUS position next term? Right now it's unknown. I'm sorry Gore won't be in the line-up. I'm sorrier still that Hillary will.
Lex, you're an idiot. Wake up and smell the roses....while we still have roses.
Liz has it right - I hear all the whining about global warming but have yet to see true reactions on an individual level. We like our cars, are convenient plastic water bottles, our warm, toasty houses in the cold months. Think of anytime voters have shot down higher taxes to improve public transportation, the times wind farms are voted out because of the "not in my backyard" attitude and you have your answer right there. We don't want to pay to save the planet (which you can't save it anyway in the long haul).
I am sure he is a sincere man, but he is NOT presidential material.
we all drink from the same well.
