Former New York Governor George Pataki told supporters he cannot guarantee he is going to run for president this cycle and has given his blessing for them to join other presidential campaigns.
Pataki's presidential ambitions have been reduced to a waiting game, dependent upon the political fortunes of other Republican presidential wannabes.
Pataki, who also freed supporters to back other candidates and recently joined a New York City-based law firm, hasn't burned any bridges:
Pataki told The Associated Press in December as he prepared to leave office that he would decide "sometime early" in 2007 whether to run for president.
"I'm going to continue to be involved in the public policy debate," he told the AP Wednesday when asked about his presidential plans.
I disagree with Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute and an expert on New York politics, who says this is smart politics on Pataki's part. By choosing to put his campaign on hold, Pataki's Presidential chances fade away. Should Giuliani and McCain stumble there are still 11 other prospective Republican candidates to pick up the pieces. Everyday Pataki waits the other GOP wannabes and voters move beyond Pataki.
Pataki should just end his waiting game. The sooner the better.
