Born Hillary Diane Rodham.
In the beginning it was Hillary Rodham of Arkansas.
After moving to the White House, first it was Mrs. William J. Clinton.
Later it became Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Then it was Hillary Clinton.
More recently, it's been Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Now, as she tries to become the nation's first female president, she wants to be known to supporters simply as Hillary.
According to CanWest News Service, this is an attempt to cash in on her celebrity and differentiate "Hillary" from Bill:
The first-name-only strategy is being viewed as an attempt by Clinton to develop a national political persona independent of her husband, the former president, while also elevating her to equal status alongside mononymic entertainment icons such as Oprah, Madonna and Bono."There are very few people in our popular culture universe who are defined by one name -- Cher, Oprah, Madonna. If you are up in that stratosphere, like Hillary Clinton is, why not play to your strength and exploit that for all its worth?"
There must be a huge investment in polling and focus group crap behind this informalization Nevertheless, it all seems a little too Prince-like for me.

That's a good one, it made me snort coffee out of my nose!
She has articulated no firm principles or beliefs, nor has she indicated by her actions that she does, indeed, have any; save her unquenchable desire for political power. This country is in for serious trouble IF she ever is elected President.
However, I just don't see that happeneing. I believe a Hillary candidacy is the dream come true for any of the Republican candidates and the Republican party as a whole.
"Are the American people really so stupid (collectively speaking) that they can't see how totally vapid this woman is?"
Vapid, as in lack of zest, flat, dull, etc., as in too dull to give us a good slap on the back and and with whom we can sit down and have a beer? I wonder if she even has a thought in her head, much less an intelligent one.
In answer to your question about "collective stupidity" the answer may well be yes -- if recent experience is any indication. Think who the electorate picked the last time around, and the time before that.
Hmm, a president with zest, who can think their way out of a paper bag -- that's what we need.
Hillary is conniving and treacherous and doesn't deserve the backing of her own party (which, at the end of the day, I don't think she'll receive), much less being handed the reigns of power of this nation.
Since this an article about HRC and NOT GWB, I'll leave those pointless comments alone until another day.
Hillary will bend with the wind - will not make a good leader.
There are many who say she is already well "bent" though Rupert Murdoch seemed to think she wasn't "bent" enough in his direction. I think that's what the flap was all about with Bob Geffen. It's not like they walk up, hold out a bag of goodies and say, "do what you will with it and have a nice time."
I'm afraid "principles" have become a figment of the imagination to be molded as they think we see fit. I don't think Hillary is alone in the "selective principles" arena.
Stepford Wife -- interesting that you would use that phrase. Do you know about her remark when on a previous campaign trail with Bill [I forget which campaign it was now ] when she said in effect that no one should expect me to sit at home and make cookies. I've even heard Hillary likened to a middle aged version of Ann Coulter -- now that's an insult.
I notice Ann Coulter has been dragged out -- now there's a zesty hit woman.
