One year ago, a CBS poll found George W. Bush's job approval rate was only 41%. It has declined steadily since, until the latest survey (released 1/4/07) found it had declined to 30%--with a new high of 63% disapproving. Readings on the way down were: 37% last April 10, 36% on July 26, 34% on October 9 and 31% on December 11.
The poll also found that a whopping 68% were optimistic about the new Democratic-led Congress, while only a die-hard 25% were pessimistic. Among those who thought the new Congress would perform differently than its predecessor, 69% believe it will accomplish more.
A CNN poll released Dec. 18 found these levels of public support for the issues Democrats have promised to tackle first: negotiating lower drug prices for seniors: 87% approval, raising the minimum wage: 85%, cutting interest rates on federal loans to college students: 84%, creating an independent panel to oversee Congressional ethics: 79%, significantly changing U.S. policy for Iraq: 77%, reducing the influence lobbyists have in Congressional decisions: 75%; implementing all the anti-terorism recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission: 64%, maintaining the current Social Security System and preventing the creation of private investment accounts: 63%, funding embryonic stem cell research: 62% and reducing some federal tax breaks for oil companies : 49%.
In an NBC/Wall St. Journal poll of Dec. 12, only 13% of those surveyed had a negative impression of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama and 20% had a negative view of GOP Sen. John McCain.
They latest job approval poll on Dick Cheney (CNN, Dec. 18) found that 56% disapproved of the V.P. and only 39% approved.
The latest poll evaluating Bush hatchet man Karl Rove (USA Today/Gallup, Nov. 13) found that among those who had an opinion 68% disapproved of him.

I approve 100%.
Dems tend to not have jobs and make themselves available for this non-productive nonsense, so an educated person would guess that most of those polled were dems.
I prefer facts to your believes. Back it up with a link. You also seem to have a high opinion of yourself - which is typical of blue staters.
Consulting? So, you admit you don't have a full time job. Just do us a favor - if CBS calls, hang up!
Gotta love the crybaby look on georgie porgie's poor widdo face, from the CBS website. What a flaming pussy. No wonder the pussified neocons worship this loser. Right Don?

Here's the lowdown on CBS poll weighting, for those crybaby wingnuts who can't quite grasp the reality that America is sick and tired of their broken little cheerleader pretendident. Deal with reality, losers. Hehehehe!

"No terrorist attacks on our soil since 911. "
Because booshie boy has destroyed the national treasury, launched an illegal and unnecessary war in Iraq that has exponentially increased the treat of global terrorism, and left our ports and borders wide open? Where's the logic in this? Wait...you're a republican...no logic requied. Never mind.
"Economy kicks ass."
Yes, it's awesome when poverty levels increase and middle class wages shrink year after year after year, while interest rates, inflation, and state and local taxes increase. It's also really awesome when America spends more than it takes in, bankruptcies are at all-time highs, foreclosures are at all-time highs, etc. It's all freaking awesome.
"Job market kicks ass."
Yeah, it sure does. EVERYBODY that I know now is making significantly LESS than they were one, two, or three years ago, with some earning around 1/2 as much. Most of my contacts have been laid off at least once in the past 3 years. Awesome.
"Stock market kicks ass."
Let's see...the DJ JUST popped above what it was at when Bush took over and started tearing this nation apart, after the theft of the white house on 12/12/2000, and since then, has managed a "whopping" 8% growth. 8% growth over the course of 6 years...AWESOME! That's over 1% growth per year!!! HOLY COW!
NASDAQ...still 1/2 what it was. AWESOME!
"Housing market still kicks ass even though we saw a peak a year ago."
Yes, it's awesome when people can't sell their houses, or have to sell them for less than they've got invested in them! I've got a friend who's done nothing his whole life but buy and sell real estate. He told me a few weeks ago that he can't sell ANYTHING now. That's AWESOME! He's going to have to get a real job now, and he'll probably be lucky to earn 1/2 what he was earning last year! AWESOME!!!
"The same amount of scandal by Repubs is the same amount in Dems.
Yeah, that's it! Dems were accepting millions of dollars in bribes from defense contractors and oil companies, some of it on the floor of the house! Let me guess...the "liberal media" just isn't reporting on it, right? Yeah, that's the ticket!
"Bush is not involved in that (DUH, otherwise you guys would have something on him other that BS liberal talking points). "
Of COURSE, he's done nothing wrong! That's why the whole world loves him and thinks he's such an honest, decent fellow! He's a perfect little angel! He's never lied, never stolen, never cheated, never created massive chaos and death. Nope. He's been our perfect little pretendident!
"Budget deficits are decreasing. "
Yeah, isn't that awesome? Instead of a $400-$500 BILLION dollar deficit, when had a $300 BILLION dollar deficit for one year! Woohoo! Now THAT is something for a republican to cheer about!
Let's see...when Clinton left office, there was a massive surplus that was actually beginning to pay down the republican debt. Bush took over, handed out his trillions in tax welfare checks to millionaires, and suddenly, miraculously (even though dems predicted it), produced back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back, permanent, unending deficits, leading to a total thus far of nearly $3 TRILLION in additional republican debt. AWESOME!
Is it any wonder why normal people don't take people like braindead Donnie here seriously, and why we tend to mock and ridicule them for what they say?
"I would bet that 75% of the unemployed in this country vote democrat as do most lazy people, drug addicts, homeless etc.... "
I'll take that bet.
They do seem awfully friendly towards one another, they are rather homophobic, they do seem to make an awful lot of references to homosexuality, and they ARE, after all, republican. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.
People I know are doing great. The few that aren't were the ones that were overpaid to start with... technology field has a funny way of sorting out the good from the bad.
Take your friend who sells real estate. Now that the market isn't going up 30% every year, you are crying that he may have to find a new way to make a living. Doesn't this go without saying? And did he not plan for a rainy day so he could figure out his next move?
People who own stock are quite happy these days.
Bush is going to be President until January 2009, and he's going to do it his way, regardless of what the Liberals think -- just as he's done for the past 6 years. Of course resoluteness of purpose is not a concept most Liberals are familiar with anyway, so it's easy to understand why they can't grasp the concept when it's exhibited.
"Don Rumsfeld will be the Secretary of Defense until the end of my term"
The exodus of rats from the burning ship has only begun!
You will be glad to know that Americans think Clinton a was better president than Bush by a 26% margin.
And, of course, he was.
Many more people are free-lancing and consulting quite successfully since the time Don and trouser brand retired.
Yeah, David, one of the points is that most Americans are beginning to see through the tissue of lies and deception that have characterized this inept Administration.
I don't know any loser friends. Those whom I describe are all degreed, many very well-degreed. I, and many of my friends, work in one of the fields that's been hit particularly hard by NAFTA/CAFTA/GATcetera.
"People I know are doing great."
I know a couple of them myself, but most are not.
"The few that aren't were the ones that were overpaid to start with... technology field has a funny way of sorting out the good from the bad."
Funny, but I'd never thought of middle class pay as being "overpaid." Weird how a republican would think that, though, isn't it?
"Take your friend who sells real estate. Now that the market isn't going up 30% every year, you are crying that he may have to find a new way to make a living. Doesn't this go without saying? And did he not plan for a rainy day so he could figure out his next move?"
It wasn't going up 30% per year every year that he's done it. This year, however, is the first year that he's unable to sell anything. So much for the housing market "kicking ass," right?
"People who own stock are quite happy these days. "
Some are, some aren't. The investor class, who has money to spare, and can risk large amounts in the stock market, seem to be happy. The other 95% aren't necessarily doing so well.
"I think I read somewhere on Gather that the almighty Clark as had numerous jobs in the past year and blames Bush. "
I've been laid off three times in the past 2 years, all from the same company. When one department was outsourced, I was hired into another dept. When that dept. got oursourced, I got hired by another. When that one got downsized, I left and went to work for another company. The industry that I work in is one of the industries that has been most heavily hit by the outsourcing brought on by the republican policies of "free trade."
" Typical Liberal, Can't keep a job...blame Bush"
Being downsized isn't the same as "can't keep a job," genius. I made it through a dozen rounds of layoffs at that company before being laid off the first time. I've never been fired or laid off from any other position in my life, and these layoffs were entirely about cost cutting.
"How is the job hunting going Clark. I know it sucks getting off work smelling like a big mac"
I'm doing fine, thanks. I haven't worked at a restaurant since high school (not a McDonald's, however), but I thoroughly enjoyed that while I worked there. I was an awesome cook, had awesome friends, ate to my heart's content, and learned a helluva lot about a helluva lot while I was there. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with a hard days' work. This is something that very few republicans seem to have grasped an understanding of. Instead of appreciating and applauding hard work, they tend to mock and ridicule those who engage in it. Simple class warfare.
"I wonder what Clinton's lowest approval rating way at the height of the Lewinsky debacle."
It was at its peak right after the Lewinsky scandal broke. His low point (43%) came years earlier, after he was hammered for his '93 budget proposal. His rating after the Lewinsky scandal was near 70%, as I recall.
"Who cares what his approval rating is? "
It matters a great deal to a president, if he expects to have any influence over his congress and population. A president with a rating around 50% can still get things done. One with a rating around 30% is finished.
"Clark - if you can't keep a job in this ecomomy, you might want to consider some training, maybe a change of career."
I've got a great job, thanks. I'll keep it in mind, though. It's never too late to switch careers, imo, and if this industry remains stagnant for another year, I probably will opt elsewhere. I read somewhere once that one has to constantly examine the industry one works within, and if it isn't growing and thriving, you should move on. My industry has been shrinking dramatically since 2000, and although it's stabilzed somewhat now, and those of us with obvious skills and knowledge are rewarded accordingly, it still remains but a shadow of what it once was, and is certainly not a "growth market" at this point.
Ok.
Are you still jealous..........?????? Seriously....get over the fact Im still young and your not!!!
Hi Huhh!!!
Oh please. What a silly generalization.
The point of this article is that Bush's approval rating has dropped even further. That's a fact that simply can't be disputed.
Was the latter statement a silly generalization, too, and if so, why did you not point it out?
This entire article was crap from the word go because the CBS pollsters never disclose how many of the participants were dems and how many were Republicans and whether or not it was weighted. And nobody can dispute that (unless of course you have little or no background in math).
