In 1972 the Libertarian Party nominated John Hospers for President and Theodora Nathan for Vice President. They recieved 1 electoral vote, making Theodora Nathan the first woman to recieve an electoral vote.
Although they were only on the ballot in a few states as the Libertarian Party was founded in 1971. They recieved less then 3000 votes but one of the electoral collage delegates changed their vote.
I have been a member of the Libertarian Party for nearly twenty years. I would love to be able to say that our society is enlightened enough that people actually vote for our candidates. We keep plugging along. It will happen.
The Libertarian Party is at a crossroads. We are running more serious candidates then ever. Here in Vermont we have already started recruiting state house candidates, and started raising money for 2008.
I ran for state house this year and got 29% of the vote. In Vermont our highest vote getter was Jeff Manny who got 44% of the vote. Recent polls show that 20-30% of Americans are Libertarian. We just have to convince them we can win. I am opposed to running paper candidates.
