Who is your pick for President?

As the Presidential election is already heating up I have put together a list of what I believe are the top 5 candidates for the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, and the Libertarian Party. I will list them out. Who is your pick for each party, and which party do you most alighn with?

 

Republicans:

 1. Rudy Giuliani

2. John McCain

3. Mitt Romney

4. Newt Gingrich

5. Sam Brownback

 

Democrats:

1. Hillary Clinton

2. Barack Obama

3. John Edwards

4. Bill Richardson

5. Wesley Clark

 

Libertarians:

1. Steve Kubby

2. George Phillies

3. Christine Smith

If it's to be a Republican I would pick Sam Brownback of these choices and Wesley Clark for the Democratic Party. I don't know the Libertarian candidates.

There have been a number of articles here on Gather written on the subject (I have written a couple), and they focus on either who the Gatherer (1) hopes, or (2) predicts. From your narrative, I couldn't tell which one you were after. I'd like to comment -- could you respond ASAP?

Guiliani can't win. True - - - - I'm for Brownback because I think he is the least likely to win. I see no reason why the White House should be handed to a Republican this next election.

Well, the Republicans are brain dead if they don't nominate McCain -- but then again they are Republicans. A McCain/Romney ticket would be hard to beat. The Democrats will probably go Hillary/Barack -- but they should go Gore/Edwards, or Gore/Barack. The Libertarians should go for Buchanan -- but doubt they will.

Buchanan is another guy who can't win. He's too much of a lightning rod. I don't think that an African American can win the presidency at this time. Our society is still a little shallow for that. I favor Wesley Clark or maybe Dean again. My honest recommendation for the Republicans would be McCain. He has a chance of winning and he would restore the Republican Party to it's conservative roots. Not that I care to see that - I think the Republican Party is too far to the right these days for my taste.

Agreed. Fiscally conservative is good but social conservative values forced on Americans is very bad.

I haven't heard back from you, so I'll answer like this:

Who I hope:
R -- Romney
D - Don't care, would probably not vote for him/her

Who I predict:
R - Romney (see my articles in Gather.com, and pollster.com)
D - Gore (see my articles ..............)

I am more moderate in my views but I like most of the Libertarian ideas. The reason I don't join the Libertarians is that they assume that everyone starts out on a level playing field. This isn't so and I think our government should play a role in leveling the field. So, I'm not worthy of Libertarian muster. I am a fiscal conservative and a social moderate. The last election I worked on was for Mayor Daley here in Chicago. I plan on helping out as much as I can this next election. I'm not sure about President in 08, yet.

The Libertarian party is changing. I am a member of the Libertarian Reform Caucus. Reducing the platform etc. I believe that if someone agrees with 70% of what the Libertarian party stands for then you are a libertarian. The party is missing what makes the major parties so successful, a huge group of moderates.

I am definitely on the less government is more side of things. I believe that our government gets too involved in personal matters. However, having said that I believe in affirmative action (a Libertarian no no). So, my views are a bit mixed.

Ok - I left Gather to peruse the platform of the Libertarian Party. In many ways, I think I am Libertarian in my views.

only way ill vote libertarian over a democrat is if i see they are getting just as much attention as the repub and dems. Otherwise im not gonna waste my vote knowing that the libs wont win and end up costing the dems a vote and another god damn right-wing republican gets in office.

I just got done with an election and am not ready for this. If we are insisting on talking politics let's talk about the issues. In my view, a voter who is well informed on the issues is equipped to exercise his balderdash-ometer when judging the candidates. If you look for a candidate who is kinda cute first and the issues second, you risk another six years of this living hell. Have we learned anything yet? Or is the theory that we need a President who is really good at lying his way into office and then will suddenly change 180 degrees? Maybe I over-react here. But maybe not.

No, Bruce, I'm actually not kidding. Gore still retains the ability to raise a lot of money, he's "been in the woods" to gather his thoughts, he's hitting the talkshow/Oprah circuit, and he theoretcially could say, "Had I been rightfully inaugurated in 2000, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today...".

By comparison, Clinton is too polarizing, even within the Democratic party, and it's just too early for Obama. I notice the opposition researchers of the world are already starting to discover stuff on him.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a conservative, and wouldn't vote for him anyway. I'm simply predicting Gore (and Romney, for that matter).

I'll write in SC Governor Mark Sanford. He's a solid fiscal conservative known for getting into fights with the legislature over their pork barrel spending. Of the ones you listed, I'd have to say Mitt Romney, although if he runs that could bring up the same issue we had in 1960. Romney would be the 1st Mormon to run for President.

Romney wouldn't stand a chance. He's not right for the conservative base in the Republican Party. You have to include the social conservatives to win Republicans over now. Mitt Romney just isn't conservative enough. Although, he is fine in my book because he is fiscally conservative. Obama doesn't have a chance. Our society is still too shallow to elect an African American. Hillary is too polarizing. Gore would outdo either one of them. But, Gore is old news as is Kerry. The Dems are going to have trouble finding the right candidate. The Republicans will probably go with McCain who is wooing the social conservatives now. I think that 2008 will be quite a year for presidential politics.

McCain/Giuliani vs Clinton/Obama

I'm with Bruce on Gore, I think he has as much chance at the nomination as Kerry. clinton is going to be the one with the money, and the majority of Dems (per the polls) already back her...

McCain should win, but Giuliani could put up a fight for the nod...don't know enough about Romney to comment...

Did I actually see someone still whining about the 2000 election?

I would actually really like a Obama.Gore or Obama/Clinton. I would be happy with these guys in any way you mix them up. I worry that Clinton could not win but I do like her.Obama in my view represents the best for the Dems.
Romney , well I llive in Boston and he is hated here he all but ignored the state and the voters wishes his entire term. He can't win especially being a mormon the nation has had enough of extreme religious views. Giuliani can't win either he is way too liberal for the nation's republicans who are not in the N.E. West Or Chicago area and they will all vote Blue so he is done before he starts. I really do not see anyone for the Republicans except McCain and I think he would loose a general election besides a lot can happen between now and then for both parties.

I think both the republicans and democrats will nominate moderates. The same thing happened last time. People thought Dean was too liberal so thay chose Kerry. Personally I think Dean would have had a better chance. I just found Kerry so boaring, and his great 4 year plan to get out of Iraq was rediculous.

Disagree Joe, Romney is a social conservative -- prominent Mormon family. His father was Governor of Michigan and once took a swipe at the Presidency. He could get the Republican nomination, but the Republicans are stupid if they passover McCain again. Don't think Romney can win, although he would sweep the Rocky Mountain states. If McCain doesn't blow it by buddying up too much with the Christian right in order to get the nomination, there will be a lot of Democrats who will cross over to vote for him especially if Hillary heads the Democratic ticket. I wouldn't rule Gore out, he is building up a huge following with community groups and churches sponsoring viewings of the inconvenient truth. He deserves another shot without Nader playing spoiler -- but he better not pick Lieberman as a running mate, or he won't get my vote.
