Joe Biden is a smart, progressive Senator with an excellent voting record. He would be a massive improvement over Bush, as would be Russ Feingold or John Edwards. One of many things I like about Biden is that he agrees with me that Iraq should be divided into three ethnic autonomous regions or nations: Shiite, Sunni and Kurd. They hate each other and the Shiites and Kurds want to be free. Problem is, they have to do something about oil revenue distribution, because while Saddam stole most oil money for the Sunnis, the current government has given most of it back to Kurds and Shiites, who live where most oil is. To avoid ongoing civil war, the three will have to agree on a formula to share oil revenue in a way that Sunni's get enough to satisfy them. Biden did on very stupid thing about 20 years ago that still harms us, but that would not keep me from happily voting for him. He was chairman of the Senate committee examining Supreme Court candidate Clarence Thomas. Anita Hill had made several charges of sexual inappropriateness against him and several other women were lined up to give similar testimony, even though GOP Sen. Arlen Specter called hill a liar. President Bush asked Biden not to call any more witnesses and to wrap up the Thomas hearings. In a moment of grotesque stupidity--and out of politeness to the president--Biden did so, and we got a very young, very conservative justice who has almost always voted against the common good and for the rich elite. If we put aside the Thomas fiasco, Biden could be a very strong candidate and an excellent president.

The whole Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas thing was really a strange deal. While I can't stand Clarence Thomas' decisions as a Supreme Court Justice and I would have loved to have seen his nomination derailed, I had doubts about Miss Hill's claims. In the end it boiled down to a he said/she said deal and quite frankly I don't think it ever would have been resolved no matter how many people testified and how long it went on. Perhaps Biden realized this and decided to save the country time and more grief and just move on. I don't know. But if there something more substantial I don't see why he would let it go.
You learn from your mistakes. So it's good that Joe has a few. Look how better Al Gore is since he made his mistakes.
You said
"To avoid ongoing civil war, "
How foolish we are to believe that we have the Plan that will solve their problems
We sit in living-rooms, bars, or Oval Offices deciding what is right for people who's culture is so different than ours. We Owe the Kurds and the Shiites because of our desertion in the first gulf war. We owe them but are not smarter than them.
Do you want Kurds telling your city government how to keep your neighborhood clean and safe?
Let them sort it out themselves. They know better than we can imagine.
Leave troops as a support in the north and the influence of Iran in the south will help the Shiites
Everywhere else in what was Iraq I say get our children out of there. They are targets. If you help a neighbor and he thanks you by burning your car in your driveway are you inclined to help some more?
Alan you are a bright guy but this idea of us still being relevant in the mideast is on it's way out. Bush has squandered our power and our influence and he is told that everything is just dandy.
If the citizens of our great country want to help a country in desperate need of leadership and workable ideas then let us start here in this country and lets start NOW!
Well, I guess you're right. Joe did mess up on that one - big time!
But I'm not here to defend the guy. I think he's a self important gas bag.
If you hate liars, you must not be all that crazy about Bush, Cheney or Rove....
However, it strikes me that one of the attractions of Al Gore is that he has actually remade himself into the role of an outsider. This could be a valuable asset if he were to run.
I do like what Biden has done since. But we all know in a Presidential election the past always becomes a factor. His own fellow Democratic candidates seeking nomination will make a big deal out of the Anita Hill controversy.
Open your eyes, you dems, and back someone more appealing. I agree with Allen on this one.
