ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
S/he is responsible for developing the organization's editorial vision for:
- The Nature Conservancy's primary website, http://www.nature.org/;
- The Conservancy's online community-membership site, Great Places Network at http://support.nature.org/;
- The Conservancy's monthly e-newsletter, Great Places, at http://support.nature.org/site/PageServer?pagename=archive; and
- Other e-communication vehicles owned by the Conservancy's Marketing, Membership and Philanthropy Division.
S/he is responsible for conceptualizing and creating original web content that advances the marketing strategies, conservation goals, and organization-wide initiatives. S/he will develop a strategic approach to creating and revising web content to engage web visitors. Plans the building of timely, creative and appealing web features and determines an appropriate schedule for rotation and launching of new features. S/he will write and edit timely and compelling web content for homepage features as well as other second-tier stories. Provides field staff with strategic guidance and editorial standards as they relate to web content, particularly feature story placement and e-newsletters. Acts as managing editor of monthly e-newsletter, Great Places.
This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences including – but not limited to – nature.org's primary audience, the 55 million 'conservation-concerned' households, Conservancy members, and other secondary audiences (e.g. media).
This position reports to the Director, Digital Marketing-Worldwide Office (Arlington, Virginia).
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field and 3 to 5 years related experience or equivalent combination. Experience in fund-raising writing and editing preferred.
- Excellent and versatile skills in conceptual thinking, writing, editing and verbal communications.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills including discerning best writing levels for external and internal audiences.
- Experience in relevant best practices for writing for the web preferred along with clear understanding of writing for search engines and other web services/tools.
- Experience in producing HTML preferred, as are basic image editing skills in Adobe Photoshop.
- Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data, particularly web traffic reports.
- Demonstrated experience in developing strategic, high-quality marketing products and plans as well as familiarity with creative processes in order to set web editorial standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrated experience in MS Office.

- Solicit program support through clear written communications. Creates and communicates a compelling vision for web-based editorial content.
- Demonstrated confidence in providing editorial guidelines and critiquing the writing of professional writers as well as senior-level staff for use on the web.
- Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
- Willingness to travel and work long hours as required.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines.
- Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.
