"The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the dormouse do then,
Poor thing?
Roll'd up like a ball,
In his nest snug and small,
He'll sleep till warm weather comes in,
Poor thing."
Unlike the dormouse roll'd up like a ball in the traditional ballad, The North Wind Doth Blow, we found ourselves outside in the wintery landscape enjoying the snow flowers that had rained down from the skies overnight.

I must be honest, though. Last night as I was out in the dark shoveling the snow down the walkway to the car park, I wasn't thinking snow flowers. Shoveling is hard work when you do it alone. This morning when I awoke and looked out the front door, I wasn't excited. I wasn't excited at all. All the work I had done the previous night was for naught. I looked at Papa and said, "We got some pretty hard shoveling to do if we don't want to be snowbound."

As I was getting into my snow gear, from the front door I heard Papa call to me, "Hey Lena and Paul and the girls have arrived, snow shovels in hand, Bob!" Yahoo, I thought to myself....maybe this won't be so bad after all. With many hands working, the work load will be light.

Lena and Paul stayed down by the car park shoveling out my CRV and then started on the walkway up to the house.. Papa ran down and got the girls and we started shoveling the stairs and the stone pathway. Meanwhile Julia was making snow angels and tracks in the snow. Sage was more intent on shoveling and stopping once in awhile to eat the snow.

When all the shoveling was done and we had warmed ourselves inside (snow clothes in the dryer a must) and fortified ourselves with hot drinks, muffins and trail mix, it was time for sledding. We have some great sand hills surrounding the cranberry bogs... perfect for that age old sport.

As Papa and I were watching the girls climb up the hills and slide down abandonment we couldn't help but think of other years when our own boys found magic in a winter's day.

Hope you enjoyed coming along for the ride! Just remember when you go sledding, keep your head up and just push off...the adventure is just beginning. I made a video to go along with this story...check it out here. I think you'll love the music.

Wishing you all peace and happiness during this holiday season.

We have had snow showers off and on all day and as I sit here at the keyboard, through the window I can see flurries falling. I heard we are in for a new storm tomorrow so I'm glad we got a head start on the shoveling. The girls had a blast on the hills....as did their parents. But I did hear from Lena that come afternoon, they all took naps, as did we. Being out in the fresh air does tire one out!
I'm not to fond of snow either but I have to admit, today was fun!
I wish I had been in position when Paul took Julia down the biggest hill....that was a classic run... with the big crash at the end....Julia sputtering through the snow caked on her face.
(on a side note, it was 72 degrees here today...)
I have to find me a sledding hill here!
I love snow shoveling but I think S Shore got more than my area. More for tomorrow. I shoveled three times today and also yesterday.
Featured in the Triple Name Club.
Are those your grandchildren? They are beautiful!!!!
We have had snow for a week...starting day 8 tomorrow. We don't often get snow, so in years past, I have shoveled the street--VERY STEEP HILL. Not this year. UPS, the US Mail, the garbage, the recycling, the newspaper...they have all abandoned us. No deliveries whatsoever...and I guess pick up too because the garbage and recycling people are just taking away.
It's 20 below here in NB, Canada this morning. Nobody is stirring, not even the dormouse.
Just clicked on "weather for North Carver" and I see we are suppose to be in the low 30's today with snow showers in morn (but nothing is falling right now) with a mixture of snow and rain in the afternoon....so you may be right....all this beautiful snow may turn into bloody smudge before the day is out.
As for sledding....feel free to give a call the next time we have snow and you can go sliding with the girls.
The ballard is an adaptation of the nursery rhymn "The Northwind doth blow" or "The Robin":
"The North wind doth blow and we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?
He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing, poor thing."
It MUST be the company I keep!
We could not have done it without them!
Rosy cheeks
Wet socks
Pulling sleds
Through the snow.
But of course you knew what Tuck was doing....getting the snow and ice out from between his paws. Yes, a warm bucket of water certainly serves the purpose well. He loved having the girls over...they love the snow as much as he does. Going sledding gave him the opportunity to run willy-nilly up and down hills following the kids.
Although, I'll admit that if the help hadn't arrived, I would have opted for remaining snowbound!
It was fun going out in the snow and actually doing MORE then just shoveling. No wonder kids cheer when they hear snow is coming. It can be fun.
Have a Merry and a Happy... and all that there stuff, my friend... :o)
I so enjoyed your article on Christmas in Barbados....you are right...so different from New England and yet some things are the same.
Merry Christmas, Boobala, and to Sage, Julie, et al.
June in December and the days getting longer.

This is simply lovely. Although I do not care for cold weather (nor snow), I can not help but be amazed by the beauty of it. And I believe I would brave it to be able to create memories such as those displayed in the photos.
Seems you made lemonade out of lemons, eh?
I haven't been sledding in years. Haven't had the chance to take the grandkiddos yet.
Great photo parade!
lots of love and hugs...
Hot Glitters
happy new year, honey.
