Our Chia Gourmet Herb Garden
A new product out this year,It is a christmas present from this year that is still waiting in the box,
should we start growing it "or" wait closer to spring ???
Reading alot of recipes and people using fresh herbs alot,We decided to pick one up and try.
We have to make a choice of what we are gonna grow the selections are according to the box:
The kit contains only 4 pots and starters, and 6 starter seed packets to choose from.
Listed below is what we have to choose from and discriptions from the box:
Curled Parsley - Common uses : Garnish,Marinades,Fines Herbes Mix
Dill- Common uses for Fish Dishes,Pickle Sauces,Garnish
Chives- Common uses : Cheese spread, Omelets,Soup, Garnish
Basil- Common uses : Pesto,Tomato Sauce,Stuffing
Cilantro- Common uses : Soup, Stew, Salsa,Curry
Marjoram- common uses : Casseroles,Sauces,Flavored Vinegar
I will have to pick up 2 extra pots and start all 6 of them, I have decided that maybe we will start the Chives,Basil,Cilantro,Marjoram, as the first ones to start..
What ones would you choose ??
Would you start growing them now or wait closer till spring ???

If you click on the photo's it will look better :) and read it better :))
I'd lose the curly parsley. It's the flat-leaf (Italian) kind that has all the flavor. So just buy one additional pot. The basil adores summer sun and heat and will thrive then, but certainly start it *now*. Cilantro *hates* summer and will die in the first heat wave--will bolt first. Chives are hardy and perennial. Take good care of them and you will have them for a long time. Don't harvest by yanking up by the handful--it will destroy the plant. Snip each stem individually close to the ground. It will grow back!
I have to pay a visit with Connie C. and see what she has written...
No I didn't plant them yet...I keep stareing at the box and saying should I or shouldn't I...??
I have chives as one of my first choices, as for the dill it is strong and I don't know what to do with it other than dips....
Some great tips, I really don't have the greatest sunny window I lost that when we moved a few years back :( I really miss that in our old house....
when the temps drop down in the teens to below zero ,you can feel a big difference in the house...
It kinda looks like a book but it is"NOT A BOOK",
It is a "Kit' - that you can find in the garden section It comes with 4 planting pots, six different herb seed packets, growing sponges to grow them in...to grow herbs in the house to enjoy and cook with :)
I was thinking about it , I'm curious how well they will handle the changing temps in the house, we live in zone 5 with some cold winters......
is at 66 degrees, somewhat warm for spring planting. It's the best place with the most
windows for lighting.. I'm curious how tempermental they are to cold & changing
temps. when they start I usally start my planting end of feb. into march when our
coldest winter weather is behind us, and you don't feel a draft threw the house..
I need to start one of these!
Just watch for the dill getting tall. I harvest mine early when I grow it inside.
I would have to say away from the kitchen, in the bedrooms and bathroom, I would never put any kitchen item in the bathroom, Our bedroom only gets afternoon sun, as for the kids I'd probably be picking up dirt....
I was thinking maybe our room , by the window at least to start until spring.. Today it is snowing and ice storm and there is no sun at all and I have a nice light to give it a little extra on days like this :)
as long as you're keeping them
inside and in a sunny spot.
I think I'm gonna start them this week :)) will keep ya posted with an update :))
If you do then by all means begin whenever~
We had yet another cold ice storm last night, yuck:(( Can't wait till the end of this month the worst should be over:))
I have checked out your photo and left a ten as I run off…
I hope to start them very soon...
It is Minus - 20 below here, A high of 6 degree's....
they say we might see up to teens tom.
you can feel the cold threw the house, and our heater has running alot.....
My other plants are starting to show signs of stress ,due to all this wind,& Ice storms we have been having...
This is the first year we ever seen chia herb garden, we owned a "chea taz"
as well as seeing it advertised on t.v. and sales add,
I have seen other types of herb gardens in packages in stores before.
Thanks for the comment, Hope you had a nice time on vacation ,looking forward to seeing photo's :))
" I don't think I have tried cooking fish with dill,"
I love Lemon-pepper shaker mix , Garlic & Butter, Teriyaki, blackened fish,smoked,
can't ever recall the dill on fish ,will have to have one fillet that way to try :))
I want to start cooking with more fresh herbs and vegtables, alot of good cooks here on gather to teach me how that I trust :))
Do you live in a colder climite right know??
I 'm wrapped up in a sleeping bag sitting here at the computer :)) It's like 5 degrees outside with a windchill of -24 below zero, you can fill the chill in the house...
"Thats two people "curly parsley doesn't have nearly so much flavor as the Flat leaf variety"
I will have to learn what flat leaf looks like, I have lived my life in a spice jar for two long,Trying to learn some common things whats better ect....
I love Dorine Houstins comments they are always so informative :))
Flat leaf parsley is also sometimes known as French or Italian parsley. Flat leaf parsley looks very similar to coriander leaf - I can't remember what Americans call the leaves, I think you call the seeds/root coriander and the leaves something else!
That what cilantro is .... I had no Idea, I have seen so many recipes and and a entire group just about cilantro lovers... Thanks :))
Thats sounds good, how you described about the stuffing and dill butter :)))
I almost bought...But I promised my son we would do this...
Look in your produce section, you might have some already planted :))
Our chia we got at rite aide , If they have anymore they were x-mas they were 50 % off maybe more by know...
weeds in my dinner, "Dandilions" My Husbends cousins wife told me that.. Her
husbend cooks so good he even makes the weeds in our yard taste good..:)))
I'm not quite sure of marjoram, I have never used it, I will have to do a study about the tastes of these before I get to dareing, If I don't like it , It can be a nice houseplant :))LOL :))
Look in your produce section, you might have some already planted :))From 99 cents to 1.99, cheaper than seeds or fresh cut herbs in the produce section.
Our chia we got at rite aide , If they have anymore they were x-mas , I saw them marked down 50 % maybe more by know....
thanks for all the great comments on my articles! wow!
I was kinda upset they made a mistake and put two sweet marajoram seeds in
and NO Sweet Basil :(( That is one of the ones I really wanted to try...
I planted the..... Dill....
.................Sweet Marjoram......
.............................Cilantro...........
...................................................Chives.........
I will have to contact the company by mail as there is no phone number..:(( about the Basil mix up..
I checked out a herb book and it says they can start in 60 degrees - 70 degrees Thats pretty good... We are yet in another winter storm, we just got over one it was so nice outside 50 degrees and now it is snowing like crazy....More shoveling...
Anyways,... My dill and cilantro are already showing signs of growth, very tiny green spouts,if you look close enough... I will have to share some photo's.. I have different ones on my camera that I have to share :))
Thank you to all that has commented :))
And I think anyone can enjoy the fun like us and cook with fresh herbs with the kids and family.... The pots come with a neat growing sponge not dirt and It is really cute way to start a first herb garden if anyone is slightly interested in trying fresh herbs for cooking :))
I'm thinking about getting some full grown ones,
These chia ones are doing really good,
My other seelings I planted in regular little pots are really spouting very slow...
It will be an interesting change to try some fresh herbs in our cooking :))
