I'd pick something easy like a nine patch. This teaches the basics of rotary cutting, a quarter inch seam, and matching seams. The best method to use for piecing is strip piecing for beginners. I teach various quilt classes and I use this as my starter class. From there, I move on to half square triangles and then flying geese. All of these blocks are great for scrap quilting or using two or more colors. Good luck on your class.

I, too, would pick something easy. My best friend and I are wanting to start our next quilt project, but she needs to finish up her Yo-Yo Quilt first. I have two more Yo-Yo Quilts to make, and then I think I will make two denim quilts (twin size) for my grandkids. I can use my Bedazzler on my granddaughter's before I sew it together to make it more "girly" for her.

The nine-patch seems to be the best idea - I taught a kids' quilting class at the Joanne's here in KC and they actually chose the project: a tic-tac-toe board, with yo-yo's as the pieces.

What patience! I cannot imagine teaching children to quilt! I myself would love to learn. My daughter taught herself to quilt and has made several Queen size ones. She went to the library and check out several books and read them! I could not believe that she could do this with such ease! I would think to start out with something basic and simple! i would chose something to remember forever. like maybe a handprint on a square. or family names crossstitched on a square. i know that wouldn't be easy but wow...the sentimental value. One day I am going to learn to knit and sew and everything....when and if I get more time after school.
