I have a small flock of free range chickens: three Americanas, ten Australorps, one silkie (named hoppy due to an unfortunate accident) and one Guinea hen. I've raised them from baby chicks. They were timid little things, very fragile, scared of everything. They would panic if they strayed too far from their pen. They would shake in terror if a human hand reached for them.
Things are different now. They have grown into eating machines, gluttonous monsters consuming everything they see. They flock to me when I go outside. They congregate outside the door of my house. They follow me around the yard. They run out of the bushes to meet me as soon as the tires of my car hit the gravel of my driveway-- squacking, fat hens running towards me. Sometimes, I am afraid.

Our friend's kids were afraid to get out of his truck because of the chickens crowding around it.
