Today the dog and I went for a long walk. It's a beautiful day, and I just couldn't waste it. I decided to walk along a newly constructed bike path. I discovered it's really pathetic. It doesn't go anywhere and it's only .3 miles long. What's the point? Yes, it is nicely paved, and fenced, and away from traffic, but why bother? It leads out from the town recreation area. It's been ages since I was down at the rec area. We didn't use to have a rec area; not when I was growing up. It was just a place with a t-ball field and a swimming hole. You had to drive off the highway and along a wheel track to get to the swimming hole. We probably weren't supposed to be swimming there, but everybody did. About 20 years ago it was a nice rec area. The town created a nice swimming pond and a ball field. Then they changed the water flow in the pond and it turned all scummy and they let the ball fields get over grown. Recently, they've been working on cleaning it up. Five or six years ago they created an ice skating rink for winter. As I said, I haven't been down there in several years. Boy, wasn't I surprised when I got there today. There is a nice basketball court, a new baseball field, the old t-ball field, and a soccer field. The surprise of surprises was the missing pond. There's no more pond; they filled it in and now it's just a messy field of weeds. I didn't even know they had made all those changes. It's so strange. I'm glad the town is trying to make improvements and changes, because there are a lot more children than when I was a kid. However, you'd think that the town would try to advertise all these changes, and make use of the rec area. I never hear about baseball or soccer games down there. If they mowed the filled in pond, they could have a really nice picnic area. It has the potential to be a nice gathering place. Too bad nobody knows about the rec area. At least now I know about a nice place to walk the dog and play in the water.
