yesterday, we escaped from the weekenders at our lake and went to visit my parents at the farm. my parents just got back from germany - visiting friends - so we didn't head up to the cottage like we usually do. it was so very peaceful at the farm - no loud neighbors (well, sometimes you can hear the horses neigh), and gorgeous flowers all around. it was very hot and humid - high 90s, and the air was so thick you could cut it with a blade of grass. we took a few golf cart rides around, to be outside - especially at dusk, when it cooled down.
i was so pleased to see the lillies of the valley - lillie calls them her jingle bells. they smell so lovely. my cousin lynne loves muguet perfume - i remember this, from when we were young. whenever i smell them, i think of her and smile.

my favorite flowers are peonies (as so aptly photographed by tom countryman, thank you, tom!). i was so lucky to get the very first peony here. i just sat by it and inhaled the wonderful fragrance. when we got married, my wedding bouquet was mostly peonies. ah, yes. lovely! the way that they need ants to help them open reminds me of my own humanity.

this poppy was just crazy floppy. the orange-red tones were stunning against the greenery of the foliage. lillie said that they watered this flower too much.

the iris was in bloom, and just gorgeous. these pale purple ones seemed so delicate.

under the apple trees, we saw a huge morel, rotting. mom and dad ate some morels a few weeks ago. i could not believe how big this one was - maybe the size of my foot! crazy big. lillie and i call the grotto under the apple trees our fairy tent.

lillie found her tiny watering can, and helped gramma water the plants on the porch. oh, the greenery, colors high amidst the heat and humidity.

we caught several sunset shots - some sun, coming through the corners of the two barns. dusk on the grape vines, highlighting the leaves from above. sunset on the clothespins on the clothesline, fronting a pink sky. gorgeous!

and the sunset - wow. yes, we just looked our fill. the sandhill cranes were in the field, so we could look up at the oranges and pinks of the sky, or down at the newly-plowed field, and see the cranes poking about.

when we arrived home today, our own irises - which grow at the edge of the lake, in the water - were in bloom. lovely. we swam twice this evening, cooling ourselves down, and truly enjoying being in the water. most of the boats were gone, and peace again reigned.

She's lucky to have a mommy who will play 'fairy tent' with her!
The lilie of the valley and the peonies are awesome. The photos of the susnset are incredible. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful experience. It's balm for the nature lover's soul.
What's with the no capital letters?
Loved your description of it all.
dorine - i have several disabilities, one of them neurological. it is much easier for me to read and type w/o caps. sorry if it bothers you. just trying to accommodate myself! :)
(and i type without caps because i am a lousy typist, and it slows me down.)
Now, I'll just bet you never dreamed your photo would bring that bubbling to the surface of my tired little brain - now did you?
yes, we will have weekenders, but then there are HOLIDAY weekenders. what a hoot, eh? we'll have to go somewhere to escape them...
thank you!
