yesterday, for mother's day, we went down to my parents' farm. i've chronicled things i love there before, so this time i thought i'd share some new pictures. there are lots of flowers blooming, although the lilacs are almost done. the grass was oh, so green - lots of rain the last few days.

they have the coolest planters on their wide, inviting porch.
i have lots of good memories of sitting on that porch - recuperating from surgeries, reading the newspaper, sitting with family, or taking a nap on the glider.

i was picking rhubarb when we heard the most awful noises. it sounded like katie and belle had gotten to something, and it was the throes of death. we ran to the edge of our old goat pen, and saw two sandhill cranes in the back 60.
they were making these horrible noises, scary, actually. we think that they were killing a snake. they kept half flying into the air, and then coming back down. it wasn't a mating thing, since we didn't see any evidence of that. they were really focused on something on the ground. also, two blackbirds were sitting on old corn stalks nearby - perhaps waiting for leftovers?

after that, the flowers and chickens were a quiet respite. we headed home, replete with good food, good company, and good colors in our memories.

and here's one of lillie. she loves the egyptian hat my mom has. we taught her to cross her arms like a pharoah and look serious. not to mention we fell out laughing. when she's not wearing a princess dress or a ballerina outfit, her new bike jersey is a constant companion. the things i dig out of those three back pockets...NOT water bottles, i assure you!

dm, i am laughing at you seeing that ancient license plate...
george - diana ID'd it - oneis the green man, and one is bacchus. aren't they too cool?
annina - yes, the green man and bacchus are wonderful. i want some for my home! so essential - and perfect, for a porch (if that isn't being sacriligeous, if you can be sacriligeous for ancient beliefs?)....
KR - sand hills are so mean. and huge! dad said they can tear a dog up so quickly. scary. the noise was freaking me out!! it sounded like something was dying, painfully. green man is an ancient personage, often appearing in old churches and buildings (esp in the UK) - blending human features with foliage. here's a great site! the green man
i am fascinated by him! (just like i love misericords....)
thanks,. everyone!
The photo of the first planter is exquisite. It reminds me of a picture in my 4th grade reader that represented the North Wind. I love it.
That rooster is beautiful. I remember waking to the crow of a rooster every morning of my childhood.
Thanks for sharing. This was balm for the soul. Now, to get a good night's sleep.
yes, mary, the green man is awesome. now the rooster, on the other hand.....
The Tut todder is entirely too precious. I hope everyone had a pleasant Mothers day.
beautiful Jessie.
yes, lillie was taking her role seriously!! what a hoot. she had to be persuaded to take the hat off. serina, i feel like that, too!!
my camera's a canon powershot s1IS. i love it!
thank you!!
Everything has such a feeling of the newness of spring in your photos. We are past that stage in Georgia, unfortunately.
Thanks for the trip!
lillie does take her roles very seriously. when she's a pharoah, she is quite stern looking! haha.......
nathan - i'll be your eyes to the country, ok? it is all around me. you can surely be lillie's first gatherfather! she has lots of aunties!!! i can't imagine a life w/o her. she'll be a pure joy, in your life.
I enjoyed the flowers and the birds and the chikcens
but most of all that egyptian hat was really the top act
to your mother's day tribute!
what a great girl!
I have one at home but a bit bigger, she is interested in gathering too..
but she is really into soccer..i miss those days when she would dress up as this or that , she still dresses th dog though..
a picture is worth a thousand words..
thank you!
sigalit - thanks!! yes, a picture is worth a thousand words. :) such fun - soccer, eh?? well that is way cool...did she see bend it like beckham? even lillie loves that movie (although i am sure most of it goes over her head)....how old is your daughter?
