We are, all of us, played by those more powerful than each individual, like pawns on a chessboard or puppets on a string.
Dangling from the strings of the Puppeteer's right hand is the Elephant, dangling from the left the Donkey. Controlling both in a staged battle against each other is the Puppeteer. The Puppeteer is handsomely rewarded for putting on the show and the puppets get nothing as becomes their position.
The Puppeteer is neither left or right, black or white. The Puppeteer's name is Ignorance N. Greed.

Thanks alot. It's good to hear from you.
Thanks for your comment.
I was thinking Power as well but wanted to underscore what enables Power to be assumed and maintained in the first place. The root of all evil, so to speak.
Ignorance is the tool used by the Puppeteer to keep the puppets in their place. The puppets are too busy fighting among themselves because of their ignorance of the bigger world around them. If they could see the bigger picture they would gnaw at each others strings.
Greed is the motivation of the Puppeteer to maintain the status quo in order to keep the show going.
Indeed, the Puppeteer is Power personified! Good comment!
You like to read between the lines and take me to task on points that were not made. This is a disingenuous method of argument, one that borders on propaganda. You must of learned this technique from Fox News.
But I haven't yet given up hope for you, Winston, and I would like to help you reclaim your mind.
I did not say that this situation is any different anywhere else, but we are a new and unique country based on the principle that the people are empowered to pull the strings.
When the American people become the puppets they make a mockery of this country and mire us in our ability to achieve the political potential that is ours as Americans to achieve.
Even if it is the same everywhere else, does that mean it's okay for us as well? Do two wrongs make a right?
Come on now, Winston. God gave you brain and you are expected to use it.
And so it came to pass
Times were grim, grimey,
evil happily at play
We told ourselves
thus has it ever been
cancerous slime feeding
on starving misery,
beating, drawing the blood
from our calluses
with rusty spiked sticks
"Dance for us
Such beautiful rigor
Learn to please like poppety
puppets
we shelve or play with
willfully, we the special
chosen wunderkind of wealth"
Dancing, jerky minstrel clowns
dressed to allure Poppa's friends
taught by whip to angle
through our paces
until contorted organs
breathe no more
The rituals of sacrifice
bring no balm, no water
Manna, gathered by shackled slaves
packaged and sold
to the highest bidder
Empty children suckle
on hypnotic commands
But it came to pass --
not to become eternity
Lessons to be learned, surpassed
as, class by class
we commence
beyond class

Thank you for sharing your wonderful poem. I thought of Ginsberg's "Howl" when I read it.
Are we ready for the next step?
